How do most of the knife makers do this?

I have seen some very interesting designs and ways of personalizing blades. I've often wondered about the tecnique you folks use to do this.

Any hints?

Most knives are marked with either a stamp (impressed into the steel), or electrically etched. Etching is done through a stencil and can be more elaborate then a stamp.

Also though fancy symbols are interesting make sure your name is on the knife so others can find you later on.I use a stamp from Evers and is just my name.

I like my stamp now, but someday I would like a stamp with my full name and location, like:

Sam Salvati
Yulan, NY

I use a stamp with just my last name, but if I were to do a logo with a design to it, I would probably go to a electro - etcher

You can build your own electro-etcher fairly easily: LINK

I built one of these (and if I can do it any idiot can) and it works amazingly well. I don't use a pad but rather q-tips because I was getting ghosting (or whatever you knife-makers call it!) around the stencil. I found a q-tip gave me better control, especially with a small logo.
