I can buy used Marking Methods model 300 on eBay for about $200
or Personalizer for $120
Is there any big advantage for more expensive Marking Methods unit?
I've read about problems people have with etching and want to minimize my chance of failure.
It's better to spend a little more than less and won't be able to use it at all, right?

I think you can get a better deal than that on eBay. You just have to have a little patience. I have several different etching machines and they all seem to work pretty well. Variable power and the ability to switch from AC to DC are important, other than those factors; a good stencil is the key.

Not to brag, but I picked up my Model 300 on eBay for about $130. Recently I've gotten some even better deals (since I only enter low ball bids and wait, on the off chance that no one else notices the item). My best "steal" was this Lectroetch 10A for $1.04 + 13.12 for shipping. It works great.

I picked up this Lectroetch 6A for $25.oo. Since the seller was only about 15 miles away, I picked it up myself and avoided the shipping charge.

Watch for auctions where the seller doesn't know what the etching machine is for or has listed it in an obscure place. Bid low and be patient.
