Marking Methods etcher

Just picked up a Marking Methods etcher, not sure what model. It has switches for AC/DC, normal or deep mark, a knob with settings 1-5, and an amp meter. I've got several electrolytes that came with the kit, and also some I got from Tracy Mickley. I think I have the basic idea: DC on deep mark setting for 10 passes, then 3 or 4 on AC normal mark to darken.
A. Is this correct?
B. Which number setting on the knob?
C. Any recommendations on electrolytes?

You could have simply called your brother, who has had the same etcher for almost 3 years. You've pretty much got it right, though it'll vary with the electrolyte and time. I use the highest setting, but haven't found that it makes too much difference. The high setting will shock you a bit though! The other factors (electrolyte and time) seem to be more important.

I had the same electrolyte but it went bad fast. Salt water and FeCl both work ok, with salt water providing the best results so far, even over the proper stuff from Tracy. With your big mark, i'd not bother too much with the AC etch because you'll likely polish it out when you do a sandpaper run to get rid of the halo. Mostly, just play with it on scraps until you find something you like.
