Marlin Spikes

I didn't realize this but the Myerchin "L" series of folding rigging knives such as the L300P - actually have a (red?) LED light built in.

Seems like a good idea to me.......

If you really knew your splicing you ought to be able to do it in the dark ! LOL

You want to get pedantic? Okay, we'll get pedantic! :D

"Marling" is the act of putting a "serving" over your wormed and parcelled rigging. It's thought by some that the spike we are discussing was used to help tighten that line up, and thus was originally a "marling spike" which has since been corrupted to "marline spike" and "marlinspike". The issue is confused even more be the fact that the line that you use to serve your rigging is called "marline". The moral of this story is that if you're looking for one on ebay, you should search all of the above! ;)

Harlequin, it was the stand-alone spike (which came with my fixed blade) http://www.myerchin.com/B001.html that I used to put ratlines on my friend's boat. It works quite well, and is very comfy to use.

I totally agree with the spelling comments by FoxholeAtheist, I´ve heard the same thing before, though I just do knots and not rigging.

I have one of the Myerchin standalone spikes, it´s pretty good but I thinned the point a bit to use with my thinner cords. I also have a good one by Wichard, kind of square shaped rather than round and more pointy, with shackler and bottle opener.
