I think you'll find a LOT of folks here are or were martial artists but are reluctant to post a lot of info. With the internet now it seems no big deal to post this(no danger factor) but old habits die hard.
I hung around with a few guys in my teen years. Ones father was from the Philipines and was at sea a lot. When home he would call us over sometime and show us "tricks". At the time I thought it was some weird form of judo-this was over thirty years ago before we were all familar with the numerous martial arts. He also taught us knife techniques and what later was called the nunchaku. Although making no claims to my ability because they are slight, I was using balisong knives and nunchaku before most people in my area had ever heard or seen them,30 years ago.. It wasn't until years later I realized I was being shown some rudimentary knowledge of the Filipino arts.
Some years ago I was showing a friend(and Martial Arts teacher) some of these"tricks". I figure my stuff is only a level above garbage. He called some others who came over and they appeared astonished. One Filipino Kali Guro said I was doing classic Philipine knife techniques.
Since those long ago teen years I've been exposed to Western Boxing, fencing,Judo, various Karate systems,Chinese systems, etc. I have tremendous respect for anyone who devotes the time and effort to become skilled in any of these.
