Masonboro Island Survival Trip

It would be an eye opener for me Lee....I can't say I've done that kind of thing but admire you for doing it!

Personally, I think I'd miss the little comforts that are my little rewards/vices while out - like a cigar and little mickey of whiskey that I just sip on as I stare at the flames or watch the sunset.

Funny you should say that, Ken. The last night, we actually did smoke a couple cigars that we had packed away as a celebration! :D

I forgot, we also had some sort of grass-type stuff that we snacked on. It sort of reminded me of seaweed, but it was growing on land. It was really salty, though, and sort of dried your mouth out. Joe can tell you what it was called.

C'mon - admit it - you spent the night in a hotel and helicoptered out in the morning!

(If you didn't you should have)

Looks like fun! I'll have to have my wife try it.

Lee I'd have to slap you silly and kill you with your own flip flops if you came on my boat with those things......Ugh I hate flip flops. I'm walking through the airport and I see all these folks with flip flops. I go camping and I see all these dudes walking with flip flops and half the time with bloody toes. I don't get it with the flip flops! I think you guys should have at least had PFDs on board. Okay speech over.

Looked like a great time. Thanks for posting all those pics!

youd have a fit if you went to hawaii....all us locals wear "da slippa" :)

Water was the biggest problem on the island. No rocks to put into a vat of water to boil it (creating salt free steam), and the idea of digging behind a dune or two dunes doesn't work either.

excuse my ignorance but how does a rock help produce salt free steam??

Ok, I'll try to answer for him. I'm pretty sure he means by heating rocks in a fire, and then dropping them into a vat of salt water (or any water, for that matter). The -hot- rocks will cause the water to boil. Now, you can desalinate seawater like this by collecting the steam from the boiling water. The steam-collection will be fresh water, and completely safe to drink.

cant you just put a pot on the fire with salt water in it and bring it to boil that way? of course the steam would be salt free.

Sure, you could do that. Assuming you had a pot to boil in. You can use the hot-rock method in anything that will hold water, though. A boonie hat, for example, which cannot be put directly into a fire.

ahhh gotcha.. good info thanks man

So, you guys doing anything like this again soon?

I'm not sure about another trip exactly like this one. But, I'm thinking of rounding Joe up and taking a day to hike on Pilot Mountain, sometime in the near future. So, if you'd be interested in that, it's a real possibility.

Nice, where do you live? It's only about 15 minutes from me. It's a good park. It's got some neat views, and relaxing trails.

Ah, nice. My first cousin is a cop in Burlington. :)

I mean, I dont really see how it would hurt to say. His name is Neil Doss. I'm pretty sure he's still with Burlington PD, unless he's moved around to somewhere else. Are you also with the PD?
