I'm sorry (and surprised) to see these knives discontinued. If you do decide to keep using BG-42, and produce a similar series, please consider adding a lanyard hole to the handles :-)

I was very disappointed to hear that too. I thought the whole concept of the Master Series was an excellent one; Custom like quality, superb materials in a very affordable package. The cost of these knives were within the reach of most of us, and well wortht he price.

The BG-42 steel could compete against almost any knife I can think of.

I have the Squire and the 110 in the MS. I had the 532 back ordered for over 4 months. These knives receive immediate positive response. Those green dyamond wood scales against the nickel silver bolsters were incredible.

Buck did a great job making these knives, I'm very surprised and somewhat dismayed that they would stop making such a good thing.

WHAT!

I sure hope my distributor comes through with my order! The one thing that may be hurting these knives is that the market place and consumer where Buck normally sells may be balking at the additional price compared to their other offerings. Without education, someone who does not know knives and steel at a mass marketer (Wal-Mart, etc. ) or gun show/flea market will be hard pressed to pay extra for what they perceive to be the same knife.

I purchased the Buck Master series Vanguard and have been very impressed with it. It is unfortunate that Buck is not keeping the Master product line active. Quality doesn't cost, it pays!

Ken and Sid are right...maybe the regular consumer couldn't distinguish the increase cost due to materials. Well worth it in my view and actually very affordable considering the scales and premium steel grade & workmanship.

Just to clarify:
The master series has been discontinued.
Specialty steels will be available from Buck.
We are in the process of trying to develop a coherent stratagy for the future.
I agree with the education of the mainstream customer. Most people who are normal knife people, not knife nuts, don't know the value of the high end steels vs the regular steel. Just don't understand the benefits vs the increased price.

Jeff, that's inderstood, and if you continue doing short runs of these things, us knife maniacs will continue buying them. Using BG-42 was one heck of a step up. If you used this steel on most of your knives I think just about every forumite would be a buck knife owner, if they are not already. I myself would probably have 10 or so more buck knives in my collection.

Jeff,

Welcome aboard. Unfortunately joining here and at the same time having to announce the termination of the Master Series is a big bummer. I too had a 532 on backorder for 4 months then gave up. I think you folks folded your hand way too soon.

Heck you went two years with the damascus 110! (BTW, I have one and after repeated attempts have been unable to get anyone at Buck to tell me what the composition of the damascus was....can you help?) You'd think you guys would give the BG-42 a better chance than that.

For those of us who tried but couldn't get a Master Series knife, are any still available? If so, how can we secure one?

I did NOT escape from the institution! They gave me a day pass!

I agree with all of you on the Master Series.

I'll check the inventories today, and see what is on shelf. I'll have to check, but I don't think it would be too hard to arrange a few sales. We'd have to figure out the logistics. I know that there are the last 12 532's being finished, and some have to fill BO's.

Jeff,

Believe it or not I found Howard Korn of the KnifeCenter had a 532MS in stock so I grabbed it last night.

I'm still in shock over the decision to dump the Master Series.

I'm sure that if you indicated what was available (unclaimed by dealers) that you'd get some action here on the forums.

Bob is right on the money. I'd be real happy to pay retail (did I just say that?

) for one of the Bucklock Masters. My .02

I've got some QTY for the Master series. I'm not sure about selling direct , we don't want to irritate anyone. But maybe there would be a dealer would be willing to take orders on it. There isn't much left!!!

110-ms 0
191-ms 0
532-ms 5 (still BO)
501-ms 100
That's all Folks...

While we're on the subject, could you please tell us a bit about the handle material, Jeff? (composition, durability, resistance to moisture, etc.)

Jeff,
I'm going to wade in here and squalk about the short production life of the MS 110 also. I know its repetitive, but this way you've got the hard data to show the boss that maybe it would be a good idea to do another Master Series run. How about doing one up one of those titanium 110s in BG-42? I forget the model of that one but I think you know which one I mean. Oh, and while you're at it, put a tip up pocket clip (ala Bench Made) on that black titanium 110 too! - Brian

I'm wishing that I had ordered some of the Master Series, but I let it slip by. I will try and get some of the 532s & 501s if they are still available tomorrow. I can go over and pick them up if they are, since my store is only about 10 minutes away.

Please excuse the crayon. They won't let us have anything sharp in here.

I finally got that elusive 532MS from the Knife Center---I have been trying to get it since November. Now I have the 3 folders from the series. I really like these knives. Anyone interested in the 532 Bucklock you may want to check with Howard at the Knife Center to see if he has any left. As of last Thursday I heard he had 4 or 5 left. Not sure about the Squire or the 110 or fixed blades in this series.

PS...Jeff thanks for your help, BTW!

I just thought I would also register my disappointment that the Master series has been discontinued. Perhaps it was too ambitious...special handles?? Why not just take the most popular models and offer them with BG-42 blades.
Please send me the first Lancer Model #305, when it is done! [I always wanted that one, and just never got around to it.] Now that would be some sharp little pocket knife.

By the time it arrives, it will be time to rotate my current carry knife which does have a BG-42 blade.

I would suggest that even if such a project just broke even, it would be worth it for the advertising/prestige and the buyers would generally be different than those purchasing the regular models, so they would not cut into the market share.

Does the Buck factory run 24 hours a day? If not how about getting some volunteers in the blade section to work an extra hour or two to produce the special blades. The sales could then be used in part as compensation. Is this idea too simplistic/naive?

Jeff: Just wondering, Was what happened to the Masters Series sort of like what BM origanally did with the M2 AFCK? Just testing the waters for a short time to see if there is a big market for them?

Sincerely,
Adam

Adam ,
As far as I know, the Master Series was always meant to be limited. The Marketer that started the project has left, and I don't know for sure. My understanding was that is was meant to continue each year but in small production quantities. I would think that the mix of offerings would change also. Just my humble opinion. I'll try to find out more if I can.

Jeff

All, BG-42 is not dead @ Buck. You WILL see more of it. When and how I'm not sure yet. Upper management is figuring that out.

In the mean time why not pick up the Chuck Buck signiture series with a BG-42 blade? It only going to be 500 units in '99 only. It really it a beautiful knife (shamless Plug!!!). See it on our website @ www.buckknives.com

Also coming soon : Petes Custom Knife shop on the web. Find the easter egg on our website starting Monday for more info... (hint look in the 110 section.) All you BG-42ers will be most happy..... (blatent tease)
