Reading one of the knife magazines today I saw knives advertised as having mastodon ivory handles.I dont think anyone has ever (since the ice age)made a custom knife from mastodon bark !Out of the tens of thousands of pounds of of ivory I have bought and sold I have only one small piece of mastodon.Mastodons were very rare in Alaska. The few that I have seen had very thin bark. The tusks were strait and the grain has a twist to it.There were more of them in the lower forty eight but without frozen ground the ones found are not usable for knife handles.
I am looking for a motor for a single speed Wilton Square Wheel grinder.I have used mine almost every day for the last twelve years and it is getting kind of tired.I thought that someone might have swiched over to a variable speed and has there old one laying around.I would be willing to trade handle material for it.

So what is this stuff we're buying?

Mammoth? Mastodon? Walrus?

What's a good way to tell the difference?

I understand that it's mostly mammoth correct? Do you see other ivory coming from Siberia maybe?

The fossil Ivory on the market is walrus from St Lawerece Island or mammoth from Alaska or the Yukon. We are getting some mammoth from Siberia but it is hard to get it out.
I am getting less than half of the mammoth I did a few years ago because of the low price of gold.It is all going to get a lot more expensive. You can tell the diference between mammoth and walrus by looking at a cross section The walrus has a core.If you see a good deal on any of it grab it.I think the price is going to keep going up.

Chuck- I have a 1 1/2 hp Baldor motor that I took off a Burr King- don't know if it would fit on a square wheel, though. If you want to pursue it, email me at don@cowlesknives.com.
