Hi there,

I've been interested in knife making since I was a kid I just never had the tools available so it was put on the back burner.. Now that I'm a bit older and have my own place/tools I am really excited to get into it realistically... As it was suggested in a few "beginners" threads I'm going to start with a file and hand tools and progress from there. I'm wondering if anyone from the Vancouver area knows of a good place go get materials like steel and stuff for scales (G10 etc). I don't want to be the annoying newbie who asks what type of steel is best as I have done a lot of reading by any suggestions or recommendations for the easiest stuff to start out with? I'd like to do he heat treat myself... I was going to start with basic leaf spring stuff and if I am any good I will move on to a 1084 or 1095.... Any suggestions would be great!

Skookum tools in BC sells steel. Not sure what all they have but I know they sell O1 and W1 and W2 forsure. I have dealt with Rob there a few times, I think he may be the owner, and the service and shipping speed was exceptional. They don't have handle material last time I checked, but for steel and abrasives as well as many other tools I can't recomend them enough. Knifemaker.ca is also good source for most things and is located in Alberta.

I got 1084 from Canadian Knifemaker Supply Ltd. in Alberta. Shipping was reasonable for small orders and fast. Had my order in about a week. Just take out the space in the URL.

Just order stuff online from jantzs you will probably get a better deal

For steel, you will get a better deal buying here than across border probably, I have compared, and prices are nearly the same, sometimes less here, but shipping a bundle of steel up here across the boarder is typically considerably more. Especially when you are shipping it in 4 foot lengths or so, rather than short chunks.

We ship to Canada every week. You have to be smart or you will pay through the nose for shipping!

Let us know if we can help you.

Hey Mukiwa,

I've purchased through Canadian Knifemaker, Alpha Knife and New Jersey Steel Baron; all have been great, period. If you want convenience use Canadian Knifemaker but they have limited product. I personally would setup an account at TSB Shipping in Point Roberts WA and ship USA supplied products there - way cheaper and I have yet to have to pay duty or taxes coming back; just declare tbings and dont be a smarta$$.

Alpha Knife was lightning quick. NJSB took a fair big longer but has a lot of to offer as well. They bith have slightly different steels available and quite frankly I will continue to putchase from all mentioned.

Have fun and be safe. Its great fun.

Darren

If you start with a leaf spring, a file won't touch it.

Start with 1080 or 1084 from one of the suppliers
