Materials you like, when making micarta?

I made some micarta yesterday. I used canvas in one an jute in the other. I'm wondering what material others like to use, tried anything a little different, metals, or stone? Also what works best to get bright colors with well defined layers.

My favorite is paper, especially for the well defined layers. However, all my friends seem to like the denim mycarta I have made the best.

I have my doubts on whether stone would work well. I can't recall who it is, but I have seen someone layer in a wire mesh to add a metallic look.
