Math 101...USA style!

1+1=2
1+2=3
1+3=4
1+4=5

1x1=1
1x2=2
1x3=3
1x4=4

2+1=3
2+2=4
2+3=5
2+4=6

2x1=2
2x2=4
2x3=6
2x4=8

Memorize by drilling or you won't have the basic elements to use in manipulating the numbers you come across later in real life. We had to learn up to 15x15. People who "can't" do arithmetic are largely those who never did this kind of drill.

I personally think electronic calculators are great. I was always an early adopter when the latest model came out, whether with the scientific or statistical functions, or later, with programmability.

But you have to teach the early grades how to manipulate the basic numbers first, so they understand what the calculator is doing. It wouldn't hurt to teach the abacus, either.
