Very different knives. Which would be your choise for sd and why? I like both. I made a wharncliffe version of Byrd rescue knife and like it, so right now I would lean towards Yojimbo but the idea behind the design of Matriarch is also appealing.

I vote for the Yo2.

I very much like the blade shape , handle feel and I love the compression lock too.

I'm hoping they come out with an XL version one of these days.

Unless you know what your doing a knife for SD isn't always a good idea. I have both and I'd probably go for the matriarch, it's designed for use with no training and is seriously nasty

I vote Civilian. Know that very much like certain guns, you will carry it often and use it very little. Although I am a Janich fan, the Yo2 isn't my favorite knife. I like the Yo1 and Kahr Delica better. Make sure if you get a Covilian you google James Keating Civilian video. The Civilian was what I recommended to my sister in her non-gun household and I got liquored up and was showing her a few things...band aids were needed

I have seen the Keating video and watch it occasionally. The consept is interesting. The techniques would work with the Matriach, the knife is slightly smaller and so easier to carry. Also more affordable. I also like the Emerson wave feature.

I have training, also in escrima, but lately all I have done is very "point driven". This approach has its limits conserning self defence, thefore I am willing to take a step back and move towards more cut - oriented stragegy. So the Matriarch is an option.

I'd recommend the Matriarch as well, waved even better.
Reverse S blades have both the scary intimidating factor (don't underestimate that for SD) and the nasty shape to make deep, dangerous cuts.

Not as versatile in the role of EDC tool as the Yojimbo though, in cae you only carry one blade for everything

I usually carry a slipjoint, Wic Alox pioneer or Case stockmann. If harder work is expected some fixed blade. "The other knife" stays strictly out of sight. This may sound funny, but I carry "the other" as sword. Not to be pulled unless absolutely necessary. Hope that never. For training of course. I would also like to make a fixed training version, I do have a dedicated training version of Endura.

I trust the backlock of Endura/Matriarch is robust enough for the application. One thing though: I have an experience of pocket lint jamming the lock of the aforementioned training knife. Also it has some play. I have handled several Byrd and Spyderco lockbacks, some had a very solid locup, other had a bit of play.

I'd choose the Yo2 no question (but then, I use my Yo2 for an EDC utility knife and carry a P'Kal for SD). I just don't like a back lock...

Have you considered the P'Kal?

I haven't considered the P'kal. I'm not really that good with reverse grip techniques. A good choise othervise.

Pocket lint can jam handguns as well, lack of maintenance is user error. Compressed air blown in every 2 weeks or month and you are golden.

It doesn't require a reverse grip at all. Admittedly I don't use it for much (I prefer to keep my SD tool as sharp as possible only using it for light duty tasks) but I hold it in a normal grip as with any other knife... I have XL hands and have zero issues with its ergos regardless of how it's advertised.

Its like a combination of both blades yours asking about: recurve for pull cutting & slashing while still having a tip that can be stabbed straight into something (someone)

I had a waved matriarch 2 and sold it for the Yojimbo. It was an excellent choice. The Yojimbo is better EDC for me, the lock is my favorite (as I'm moving into a variety of PM2 flavors now waiting for the ATR 2 to come out) and it's easy to sharpen. I really can't see how the Matriarch 2 can even be a consideration . That's just me though... I never thought I'd own a PM2 until I bought my Yojimbo

At this point I'm not searching an EDC knife but SD tool. I decided to get the Matriarch 2 and should get it today. I will post pictures and my impressions of the knife.

There is something very scary about this knife. It feels like a surgical instrument. First knife that I'm scared myself. By the way, I think it would be quite possible to puncture with this with a punching movement. I must do some test cutting and find out.

Be careful of what you test cut if you want to keep the factory edge "minty fresh" :)

Matriarch was not designed to stab but to slice...humans

I have a P'kal and a Matriarch. P'kal is an excellent blade as well, I'd recommended it too. If you want a SD knife w/o the baggage of having it being a "weapon" the Harpy is a good choice.

Touching up this recurve edge can be tricky. I have a Lansky turnbox sharpener with both diamond and ceramic round rods, that should do the trick? Also some leather glued over a piece of round dowel could work as a strop.

With the Matriarch and this modded Byrd I think I'm covered conserning this application :)

Since the Matriarch is an SD tool, it shouldn't need sharpening very often unless it doubles as a utility knife.

I think the Yojimbo is the more versatile knife for SD. The Yo can be used in any grip including edge in grios and excel.

On the other hand the Matriarch comes with a waved model which cannot be underestimated in an SD situation.

However the most versatile Spyderco for self defense is in my opinion the Waved Endura. My personal favourite is the P'kal. However the P'kal is more ona specialized SD knife where as the Waved Endura is a great knife for all types of SD techniques and makes a great utility knife too.
