Matriarch action

I just received a Spyderco Matriarch 2 (non-wave) and I've already cut the tip of my ring finger twice. Fortunately, it's just a quick nip but the blade is so sharp it goes deep and draws blood. I assume I just need to loosen the action a bit so that when I activate the knife by way of the thumb hole, a little flick will deploy the blade to the locked position.

Is it a matter of playing with the knife for a bit and the action will loosen, or am I better loosening it and tightening slightly over time until the action is comfortable for me?

This is a no-joke self defense knife; nasty and sharp as hell. I just don't like the bugger turning on me!

You don't say what you're doing at the time you're cutting yourself, but integards to the action, it will loosen up, break in, by opening and closing the blade.
I try not to adjust the pivot on a brand new knife. I like to break them in naturally. They seem to smooth out quite quickly for me, but I am an incessant flicker!!
Good luck!

palonej has the answer. Spyderco's have an awesome way of breaking in to where it flicks out easily, but locks up solid without any blade play. I'm like you where I get a little impatient with the "break in" period, but trust me, or trust palonej, in a day or two it'll become perfect.

I have never messed with a Spyderco action either; they always break in nicely over time.

The issue with the Matriarch is that it is so stiff under one handed opening that if it doesn't pop out all the way, the sharp top half inch of the blade falls back into the liner; by then my ring finger has grasped the handle and... slice!

This never happens with any of my other blades (Spyderco Military or PM2). I expect the Matriarch should be a little tighter because it is such an SD specific knife, but I can't afford to chop my fingers during the break in period.

Until it loosens up, open it slowly with your thumb in the hole till lock up.
A day or 2 of opening like this and it should loosen up.

That's the other thing I notice about the Matriarch- the thumb hole isn't as big as the PM2 or Military. I'd think the thumb hole should be a couple mm bigger for easier deployment.

I don't have a Matriarch, but I'm pretty sure the hole on the Yojimbo is the same size, 12mm. PM2 & Millie are 14mm.
Still should be enough.

I'm just going to have to practice, maybe with duct tape on my finger (although this Matriarch will cut through that pretty quickly).
