The other day while Christmas shopping I saw a plain edge Matriarch for sale in a knife store. The store was in a mall and was crowded so I did not get the price. Are they rare. It had a black Zytel handle.

PLAIN EDGE?!?!?!? What store?? Are you sure it was a Matriarch?? Not a Merlin?? If its a Matriarch, but it.

It was a Matriarch ! I had to look twice.
I was looking for a Merlin but they did not have one. I'll stop back and hop it is still there. It was in the Cutlery and Things store. What are they worth?

I want one!

Please let me know if they have more!

I was called out yesterday so I couldn't stop back but I called. Unfortunalty the clerk didn't know what I was talking about. When I go back if it is there I will get it.....two if they have them.

To my knowledge there have never been any Matriarchs with plain blades. If this truely is such it should be very rare and valuable.

It could have been a prototype. They were plain edge and had black handles.

These photos are by Heyns van der Merwe and are from his site: www.solcon.com/Matriarch/matriarch.htm . There are some other nice pics there too.

P.S. Edit - The knife that's labeled "Harpy" in the above pic actually appears to be a Merlin.

knifecenter.com has Matriarchs listed by name on their Spyderco page. although they don't have a pic or order listing.

Heyns van der Merwe is the one who had the pic's of the plain edge Matriarch. I saw the pic's myself. I'll try again, plus I'll email Mr. Glesser. If any one would know, Mr. Glesser should. :)

that thread is from 6 yrs ago, unless ya find a PE prototype (which imho would be difficult/impossible to do) ya have to get a civvy for a PE in that style.

Has anyone carried a Matriarch or Civilian for some considerable length of time? I know these are not utility knives, but has anyone been unlucky enough to break the front section around teh tip off? I ask cause they look quite fragile, but I am still interested in acquiring one. Need input.

I've carried one for years. Never had to use it yet. Feels good to know it's there sometimes. It's not designed to be used for anything other than a weapon. I did try it out on some towels and upholstry, it's a great "matter separator." The tip did not break. If it is used as intended (i.e., close quarters slasher), I doubt if the tip would break unless you got it stuck in bone. You might chip the edge on clothing rivets, but the tip shouldn't break.

I was wondering. I have a "Matriarch" and a Civilian both. My Matriarch has ATS-55 blade steel which I have always liked. The Civilian is a newer one with VG-10. With VG-10 designated an "agricultural steel" over in Japan I am wondering if the VG-10 would be enough of an upgrade to be able to use it as a utility knife. I know it was not designed for that purpose. But it would b nice to have the best of both worlds. I would guess with the super hardness of ATS-55 your VG-10 would be a better performance bet. ;)
