Matriarch ??

The tip of the knife, whether in VG10 or ATS55 is fragile. Doesn't spyderco put in a warning that it's not a utility knife? I've seen a fair number of used Civilians for sale missing a small piece of the tip. Why use the knife as a utility when there are plenty of other options. For example the harpy.

Hello All

I'm gonna have to go with the majority here. The only thing my Civilian cuts is the occasional sheet of paper to remind me of how freaking sharp it is. Everytime I open it, I shudder.

For everyday cutting chores my Chinook I has never failed and takes a beating. I had to cut down through a car seat bottom (springs and all) to retrieve a computer module (part of my job). While I dulled my Chinook, no edge damage resulted. After a good sharpening, it was as good as new.

Spyderco knives make me smile and there's always more to buy :) Thx Sal

Thanks for the bump. I have never seen or heard of a plain edge Matriarch. Thats a shame ,IMO. I had a Matriarch but sold it when I was in school and needed some $. I would go ahead and get a Civilian now for the PE, but with it being just slightly over 4", in MO it is illegal. I would love to see a PE Matriarch or a small version of the Civilian.

Mongo-man, if you can help it, don't cut the airbags. My brother is an EMT and he says there are gasses in those bags, that if you cut them, can cause some very bad skin reactions.

If I am not mistaking, do not the gases escape the airbags anyway? I mean once they have deployed they deflate. The gas has to go somewhere.

Yes, the airgag gasses escape into the car-interior anyway. It's really an inhospitable environment after a crash/deployment, and folks do what they can to get out on their own. Nobody WANTS to stay inside their cars and breath that stuff unless they're trapped or out of it. Cutting the bags to extricate oneself faster makes sense to me.
