The answer is simple. When the new crop of Matriarchs were released Spyderco did the honorable thing and released long standing backorders at the old dealer price.

Any new orders were shipped at the new dealer price which was substaintally higher. Be happy you got one at the 1999 price.

at that price I think the civie is a way better deal than the matriach. You can get civie for about 120 or so.
