While in Portland for Blade West , I took a couple knives with me to show around to some makers I know and get some feedback ( they were not for sale at the show ). While at Bill Tuch's shop ( where I was most of the weekend learning ), Matt Cook dropped by with some of his knives.

Man he makes some dam nice stuff. This little wharrny kept talking to me. I told Bill how much I liked it and he said " Heck why don't you guys just trade, wharnny for wharnny ? "

Matt checked out a few of mine and said , heck if you want to trade , let's do it. He recently did this one , didn't even logo it yet , don't matter to me , I already put it to work on my leather working bench tonight.

I forget the steel on this one , but the hollow grinds are really dam nice , and I just love the stacked leather handle. Feels like polished glass ! Overall length is about 7 1/4" , blade is just over 2 5/8 , blade is mirror polished .

His leather work is really friggin clean as well. His work really impressed me.
Thanks again Matt.

Hanging at Bill's shop along with my bro Dan and Matt , it was like a meeting of the outkasts ;)

Bill Tuch was extremely gracious to spend many hours over 3 days with me talking about knifemaking , giving me design input , showing me how he does things and correctly some flaws I have in my techniques. Great times , great learning experience , and I will certainly be back to visit him again soon , hopefully in a few months for more learning , and to get me started on folders.

He asked me to make him a knife , so that is what I did , and he even let me use his equipment to start making him a knife , that horizontal JL grinder had me drooling. Now I just have to finish it out here at home without screwing it up :D

nice to see some knives from the show. thanks for that. can you tell us more about the show, attendance, makers etc

I am terrible with names , Friday seemed light attendance wise , at least at the time the show opened , Saturday appeared much busier , I never made it back Sunday.

Besides the PINOY Knives-part :), I am also digging that wharnie and the sheath looks neat too! Looks to be a good user.

Not a bad trade as well! I do however like the design attributes on your knife more, specifically a shorter plunge line/choil area and a more pointier tip.

Agree.

John,

You'll not screw it up, you will finish it out and be proud.

I didn't ask john to make me a knife....I was gonna steal the warrny he had...lol:D

John,
You have more talent than you know. I'd pick one of your pieces over many.
Now get out in the shop, finish that thing and get back here. I had a blast!

As far as Matt Cooks knives go, Day and night from when I met him a few years ago! Sharp crisp grinds and a very clean finish. I was very impressed with his latest work. Now if he'd finish his new shop and get some flippers out...

Yeah , Bill told me if that lil wharnny made it into his shop it wasn't leaving... I was ok with that , however Matt got it , so I was more than happy to make him another :)

Thanks for the kudos Bill , I try to make each knife a little bit better than the last. The changes you made to my design really made it pop. You sir have a very keen eye for design and extreme talent for execution.

I will be back...and I will be working on those 2 knives this weekend , along with finishing up a couple that are needing to be done ASAP to pay for that brief encounter with Henderson PD on the way home from work today....drats !

Not sure what that references , but the feeling i got he was from the Phillipines , I know he mentioned speaking 3 diff dialects.

Wha? 3? Impressive! I know only 2 :D!

Pinoy is the colloquial term for Filipinos, like Canuck, Brit, Aussie and Yankee (which I sincerely hope wasn't derogatory).

I don't think Matt uses the word Pinoy in Pinoy Knives as derogatory. I know he is a member here as well.

Er, no John, what I was referring to as derogatory was actually "Yankee" (see my last post). What I meant was that by describing Americans colloquially as "Yankees", I hope it wasn't being derogatory or offensive :o

I met Matt years ago at several shows out here in the PacNW... He's always had one or two that interested me... But, he finally got me when he took on a project for me. His work is robust, to say the least, and every time I've run into him, his work keeps getting better. And he's a great character to shoot the breeze with - it's good to hear he's still in the game! Would love to run into him at a show again!

"Pinoy" is the term for a Filipino person. It can also be specifically referring to a male Filipino. Pinay is the female version. I'm pinoy myself- well, by blood. I'm all Californian at heart. Happy to be both. I think untamed was just joking about it because he's Filipino.

Very nice knives. I love wharnies:thumbup:

I'm guessing you're not speaking to me because I didn't think you were using it as a derogatory term. More power to you bro, you probably deserve to be called pinoy more than I do:thumbup:. I can barely understand anything in tagalog:o Nice knives BTW:)

Pinoy Knife (and the others):

Huh? OMG! Yikes! Something got terribly misunderstood in all of this, maybe because the entire post wasn't read and got sidetracked into somewhere else. How can I ever think that Pinoy knife is derogatory? (I was even proud of it by highlighting that in post #6. I think I should have used the word "besides" rather than "aside", my fault). I wasn't referring to you pare. Please re-read post #14. I was in fact trying to apologize to you Americans for calling you Yankees since I hoped it wasn't a derogatory term ---> Yankee (Filipinos are Pinoys, Canadians are Canucks, UK citizens are Brits, Australians are Aussie, and Americans are Yankees <---its that word which hopefully was not a derogatory term in post #12).

Heck, I've always been so proud of the fact that some foreigners have decided to adopt our ways and cultures. In fact I've just recently added BF buddy who delves into our history and culture. Also, I almost married a girl who was an Aklanon too!

I sincerely hoped that cleared it up. :)

Also like I said, I like wharnies for their great utility value. The rural folk here use them on their large blades as good bamboo cutters and shapers.
