Maxace Knives - Opinions?

I've had a Maxace Balance 2017 for a while and really like it. Outstanding fit and finish; snappy flipping action; perfect size/weight for EDC. It's been getting way more pocket time than my other folders...

I just took delivery of the Maxace Tank (my version is 031/200). A lot of thoughts about this knife. From a design standpoint, I really like it. It looks great and is very comfortable in hand. The box it comes with is also a very nice touch.

I do have my complaints and given my sample size of 1, I may have just been unlucky. However, given the fact only 200 were made, I question the quality department over at Maxace. Having nearly a dozen Reate/Reate-made knives, I tend to use them as my benchmark against other Chinese knife companies. What I appreciate about Reate is that every knife I have received from them has been of great quality. From my first Horizon to the Tashi T4000, all have been stellar.

Here are some of my complaints:
  • Off centered right out of the box. Adjusting the pivot did not immediately fix centering
  • Bearings felt dry. I took it apart and cleaned off all the grit and relubed. Action is much better and fixed blade centering issue during reassembly process
  • The outer part of the pivot screw was covered with gunk and not in pristine condition.
While I plan on keeping the knife because I enjoy the design and action, these things need to be taken care of from the beginning. Again I understand this is a sample size of one but if they want to compete against WE and Reate, they need to get the knife right before it ships out.

It's good to have feedback, negative or otherwise. I agree with you on the bearings, I did the same with mine (I do like to take apart my knives) and it does improve things. And yeah an off center blade is something glaring to me as well, if it's just a little bit I can live with it, but if it's immediately noticeable it leaves kind of bad taste in your mouth. Not the end of the world but it kinda shows a bit of a lack of care when looking a knife over, especially if you add a wooden box for more "premium" feel, so to speak. Add some pictures if you can.

Also, I'm jealous you already got a T4000, we need pictures! (well I need pictures o_O:D)

I will try to post some later today. I agree with you on the last part about the perceived premium feel. All the accessories and add-ons are meaningless if the knife itself comes with issues. Chinese-based companies almost have to go above in beyond to really penetrate the American market the way Reate and WE have. I feel it should have never left the factory in its delivered condition.

The Blade centering issue was very noticeable. I am just glad I got it to where it is now

To be fair. I still think the Tank is good knife. The multi row bearing system is nice and offers a smooth action after maintenance.

I honestly believe Reate makes some of the best, if not the best production knives today. If Maxace wants to compete with Reate/We/Kizer, they need to step up their QC. The potential is there to be really good

I own a maxace panshi which is one of my nicest knives. Out of the box the action was terrible but after a drop of nano oil on the detent ball it’s the best in my collection. It’s on MRBS and it falls shut. M390, titanium, carbon fiber, and timascus for $230 seems like good value to me compared to WE and Reate.

I’ve got my eye on the pmp grizzly, which is produced by maxace. The knife is a brick but it’s an itch I might have to scratch.
