Someone gave me this Maxam hunting knife. I haven't been able to find one at any price and am afraid to use it because I fear the blade breaking off. I thought about giving it to my wife as a garden tool, but I'm afraid it might break on her, too. She'd just use it for weeding and light cutting.

It looks nice and feels great in the hand. I was wondering if someone wanted to swap me a used Sebenza for it. You know, the plain model...nuthin' fancy.

Not sure how far the blade extends into the handle or whether it's just glued in. The base is weighted with some kind of metal (lead?) and the blade has a nice polish and a pretty sharp edge.

What do I have here, guys?

Probably a small rat tail tang thats threaded on the end, the pommel which is likely made out of pot metal probably threads on to the tang and keeps the handle assembly together. That was the construction on the only maxam fixed blade I've ever seen in person, and yes it was very broken when I saw it. The threading on the pommel had stripped out, after drilling out and filing on the pommel I put a small nut on it, which lasted until the owner snapped the blade a sort while after.

Might want to hold out for a micarta inlay sebbie. :)

I have one of those, one of the first blades i ever bought. It's actually held together for a surprisingly long considering it probably cost $1 to make in china.
The butt fell off mine, but i hammered out the metal it was attached to to form a mushroom shape so the handle stays on.
All i've done with it is chop some branches and bushes when i was 15 or somesuch.
Pretty nice design, i would buy another if someone made it out of something more reliable than ''STAINLESS STEEL''
I think it had a bear or some cheap crap painted on the side.
I notice your picture doesn't say CHINA on the side of the blade like mine does.

I wouldn't want one of those if they were giving them away. Nobody's going to trade you a Sebenza for that.

Thanks for the offer, but I think I'll hold out for the Sebbie. (I think my message system must be out of order...no offers have been coming in.)

I'll tall you what Esav. If I don't get an offer soon, I'll take you up on the swap. Just try not to scratch it between now and then. I've got eight inches of "surgical stainless" quality blade waiting.

For those of you wanting to buy this lovely knife, I'll sell it for one U.S. dollar -- a bargain -- plus $35 shipping and handling, of course.

BTW, just out of curiosity, why is surgical stainless so good? They use surgical tools once and throw them away. But most people don't know that. Maybe this knife is intended to use once and be thrown away. (One woman on Amazon actually bought this model knife for her husband, who then took it on a hunting trip where...amazingly...it broke. Oh, what a predicament! I wish my wife loved me enough to buy me one of these. Maybe I'll give this to her for Valentine's Day.)

Which reminds me...you guys go out and buy your sweethearts something nice! Don't give 'em money or vacuum cleaners...and don't get them this here knife!

For some of you Sebbie owners, this is a whole lot better for opening mail. You don't have to fetch it out of your pocket, open up that little pouch it comes in and worry the blade open. You can just pull this fine hunting knife out of it's cardboard-reinforced sheath and use it's surgical stainless blade to slice through mail without having to saw at it. And to all you Sebbie owners who keep your trusted knives in a safe, you can get this hunting knife and just pretend your Sebbie is still in the safe. How can you turn it down?

I'll be watching for offers!

 I have one of those blades somewhere. Bought it at a flea market when I first started collecting knives. Another interesting fact is if yours is like mine, removing and replacing the knife in the sheath, the knife will cut the sheath. The sheath I have on mine is wrapped in duct tape.

Yeah, my sheath is not what you would call first class. I can only imagine if someone went to defend themselves with a knife like this. The other guy would separate the blade from the handle with one blow. At that point I would hope the guy with this knife would be a good runner...unless he's a bad guy.

This robust hunting knife made from 420J2, which, as most of us know, is a low grade steel made mostly for junk (it's so cheap, in fact, that it's rarely even heat treated).

I have a neck knife that cost $2.85. It's a full tang sharp, toothy thing made from 420 standard steel that can be pulled rapidly from its case. The knife has never been sharp, but its shape makes it immaterial. Although it's a cheap knife, it's about as good as any other neck knife of its size selling for much more. Why? Because it doesn't need to be sharp. It also won't break. In an emergency it will do just as well as neck knives costing far, far more. Yet I've seen people drop a couple of hundred dollars for a stupid neck knife! But this piece of junk can hurt or kill the person using it. It can be sharpened to a deadly sharpness and if it breaks while it's being used, the blade can fly off and can cause a lot of damage.

I didn't ride bicycles until they came up with mountain bikes, and I
didn't carry knives until I found this little locking knife in a Dollar Store.
I despised 10-/3-speed bikes as well as slip-joint knives, and saw no
use for either (and still don't). But this little knife showed me the
beauty of what a lock-blade pocket knife could be like. This knife cut
better than the many Swiss knives I had been given (and which are
still in a drawer somewhere) and was larger than the little Case knives
others had given me (which are in the same drawer). It's cheap, trashy
little Chinese knife, but I still take it out and look at it occasionally.

I'll tell you what; I'll trade you for this advanced polymer tactical use extreme self defense knife. You can even take it through airport security. Since this knife is so wicked and brvtal, you'll have to act fast.
