Maxamet long term edge retention testing.

Wow, I didn't know such swap could be done! I've seen folks drill out the rivets just to put that blade into some g10 handles. Then they sell off just the s30v blade. Never seen a complete swap before. I'd imagine it was tough getting the blade, pivot bushing and both washers lined up just right!

Have you noticed a big difference between the swap now?

I just got the Maxamet today and literally opened her up. I personally like this combo better, but that is just my opinion, no real performance change I would think.

Im not a huge LW fan, but it is nice that it could be salvaged and used. The LW is a tad tight (doesnt free fall) but I can live with it.

you should be able to adjust the pivot slightly to fix that, no?

It should work. Honestly, I was just glad to get it in there. Im at Blade today but will see aboit it when I get home.

When I sharpen my Maxamet to a mirror polish I find it not cutting paper as well as putting a 600/1000 grid bevel on it. Any thoughts why this is?

I find that a nice polish on the Maxamet shows what the steel is really capable of. For me, it's holding that razor sharp edge for quite some time, more so than most of my other steels. I'll continue to polish and convex this edge over time.

^^Pics have me questioning my first Manix. Always figured that if was going to grab a Manix for the day I would just end up using an SnG or SMF for those tasks, as i've always seen the SnG & Manix filling a similar role, so have always avoided jumping into the Manix rabbit hole. Would be another great Spyderco model tempting me with all the Sprints & exclusives.

Nice edge 91b!

interesting. I could only assume. might have to do with the large carbides. could be how or what your using to sharpen it.
I've been told by a few maxamet likes a toothy edge rather than mirror polish.

I don't know about yall, but my Maxamet is taking a very nice polish on the edge. The mirror polish is coming out nicely. It's scalpel like in finish...

Is that a forced patina?

Red apple cider vinegar for about half an hour!

Here was the natural patina before I dunked it in vinegar...

Vinegar worked great on one of my Esee knives. Used hot vinegar, but probably not necessary.

Can't wait to get my Maxamet PM2 and give it the treatment.

91Bravo,
Tell me a little more about that forced patina please.
1. Did you dunk the whole knife, enough to cover the blade tang or just the blade without its tang? I wonder if the patina can effect the pivot function?
2. Has the patina helped to prevent or slow rust?
3. If you got vinegar into the pivot, how did you neutralize the acid when done?
Thanks

PS It looks great

Maxamet sounds amazing. Might have to pick one up in the near future if it comes out in a Para 2. For the moment, though, I'm very pleased with my Para2 in ordinary, pedestrian S30V (still one of my favorite steels), and I haven't yet really given my Mule in CPM 20V a hard workout.
