Sell me on the Al Mar SERE 2000...I have been looking at these on line and am thinking about one but have yet to handle one...you seem to love 'em so...SELL ME ON THEM, PLEASE!
I can't seem to get my PM to work.
Thanks,
Bill:eek:

The Sere 2000 is a sturdy full size folder and I think it's the best value for under $150.00. You should be able to find one for less than $125.00 on www.

The blade is excellent and comes very sharp. The operation is very smooth and the handle fills the hand just right.

Some may find it a bit heavy at approx. 6oz for EDC.

The clip is positioned in such a way that it rides low in the pocket. Good that it hides the knife but also makes it a little tough to get to unless you add a short lanyard.

I stoped carryng mine for EDC because it felt too heavy in my pocket. I removed the clip and now carry it in a belt sheath for when I'm camping or likely to need a heavier knife.

You won't be disapointed with it.

Cheers,
Collector

The SERE 2000 is by far one of my top three folders, and I own nearly 30.

It was my first and only Al Mar purchase. I bought it without ever having handled one in person. When I opened the box I was SHOCKED!! This knife was BEAUTIFUL! I thought that it was too pretty to be functional... I was DEAD WRONG!! I took it out and opened it. The action was literally smooth as silk! Just as smooth as the best of my Benchmade Axis Locks which are known for their smooth opening. The liner lock clicked with a resounding "CLACK" fit the tang (or whatever that's called) perfectly, and was ROCK SOLID! The edge was EXTREMELY sharp and I didn't dare to "improve" the edge, because I knew there was no way I could get it sharper than it already was. I love the VG 10 steel, it gets REAL sharp and holds the edge for a LONG time!

This knife is heavy and I knew that when I bought it, but I don't even notice the weight. This knife is very solid and very strong. I have read some reviews where people have had problems with the SERE 2000 failing the "spine whack" test, but mine has never failed on me. The knife rides really low in the pocket which I like, but as mentioned before, it can be a little hard to draw. I prefer to carry mine horizontally just to the right of my belt buckle in a large Benchmade pouch. You can buy one for about 10 bucks. The knife fits in the pouch perfectly and is easy to draw and I just flick the thumbstud with my thumb and the blade swings open and locks into place.

I truly think you'd be hard pressed to buy a better knife for the money. I am going to buy another one as soon as I get the money.

I hope this helps.

Hell YES!!! SEREs rule.
Just look at any knife in the same price range, and you'll find no comparison.

Silversport,

I just drafted a long, loving paean of praise to the SERE 2000, went back to review it before posting and lost the lot

Bottom line, buy it. 3 folders are mentioned with disproportionate frequency when hard-use EDCs are discussed:

Al Mar SERE 2000

Chris Reeve Sebenza

Benchmade 710

None of these will disappoint you. All are excellent knives. Let me try and explain. The Sebenza is a Ferrari; the BM 710 an SUV; the SERE 2000 a Hummer. All superb vehicles, but when the chips are down, you're miles from a garage and the snowstorm is bearing down, which do you choose?

The Sebenza is a Rolex; the BM710 a Tag Heuer; the SERE 2000 a G-Shock. All will keep excellent time, but if you're backpacking through the Panamanian jungle or trying to moor your dinghy on the rocky shore of Knoydart in horizontal rain and sleet, which would you want on your wrist?

One final recommendation:

Buy the SERE.

Now.

I'm don't exactly agree with those comparisons just because the SERE isn't ugly. (not that a hummer is) but a G-shock?
Anyhow, just buy the damn thing. It's a good knife and a fun knife. Probably the BEST testament to a good knife is speed at which you can resell it on the exchange forums and SEREs go F-A-S-T------------------------->>>>>ZOOM...... C-YA. So Long. Good Bye. Get it?

Silversport, instead of asking us to sell you one, why don't you tell us what your hangups might be, and we'll help you get over them, I think that will help you much more.

Great responses, all...well here are the hang-ups.

The SERE is a little above my price threshold but I have found one near it and may bite.
I don't really need it.
I have other knives that can do most of the things I would use the SERE for but...it is a beautiful knife!
I have yet to handle one and am a bit nervous about buying site unseen.
I am a little nervous about buying over the internet.
I don't know exactly when this fever began (yes I do!) but why after 42 years of life have I found I gotta have knives???
Itz all YOUR fault!!! (That's it, I blame everyone else!)

Thanks,
Bill:eek:  :p :D ;) :)

Ha! Of course you don't really NEED it. I don't NEED the hundred knives I own either but I sure do like having them and I'm not about to sell them. My theory is if you think about a knife for more than a week and still want it after that time then buy it! As far as buying on-line the chances of something going wrong are pretty slim. Heck, if it doesn't fit your hand or it just doesn't seem like your kind of knife after having it for a little while put it up for sale and some other knut is bound to take it off your hands.

If you find a cure for this "fever" let me know. I quit drinking this spring and that was a lot easier kick than this knife habit ;)

I have two. One was made in Seki. The other in Moki. The Seki is top quality. The one made in Moki ...... lots of problems. I have heard of others saying that their Moki-made SERE 2000's were flawless. I must of recieved a dud?

well some would say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I personally think the hummer is one beautiful piece of machinery. Sometimes you don't need sexy lines like a ferrari to look nice. Anyways that being said I think the SERE2k is a very "regular" looking nice, nothing special about the blade shape or handle; however, it is one nice knife. It's one of the few knives that i've never really heard any complaints about. Al Mar quality is definitely up there with the best

I think Moki is the name of the Japanese manufacturer who builds the S2K for Al Mar. They make a fine knife, mine is a Moki and it's perfect.

I currently rotate EDC between the SERE 2000 and the Military. They are both excellent knives. The only downside to the SERE is that it is heavy, and that really doesn't matter a whole lot to me when I consider the excellent build quality it has.

It's heavy and bulky. If you want that kind of quality and edgeholding at an affordable price, buy an.............................................AL Mar Shrike!

It's got all the sweet qualities of the SERE 2000, but is much sleeker. The only weakness comparatively is that the Shrike's pointy tip probably isn't as strong as the SERE 2000's (but it's much nicer looking). You get the same fit and finish. solid lock-up and VG10. They seem to go for around $100.00 in the Exchange, or for a bit more on the net.

JMHO,

I know why you need it. YOU NEED TO FIT IN, YOU NEED TO BRAG TO NONBELIEVERS HOW GREAT YOUR KNIFE IS, YOU NEED TO COMPARE IT WITH OTHERS YOU OWN TO POST A REVIEW. YOU NEED NEED NEED. GO GET YOUR FIX. WE'RE ALL ADDICTED.... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! :p

Interesting analogy, Maximus. :D I like to think of the SERE as a Land Rover. A spear point Buck Strider is a Hummer.
Still, I would pick the Al Mar SERE over the Sebenza or BM 710 simply because it is more utilitarian, not to mention less expensive than the Sebenza! The BM 710 is a fine knife as well, but the SERE has better ergonomics and no (Omega) springs to worry about.

Bill,

I hope you don't blame your "knifeaholic" status on me for selling you that Emerson! I don't have a SERE, I used to have an original Mini-Sere years ago, I do have a Nomad, Al Mar's are top-notch production knives. Get the SERE!

After all the hubub you've caused around here, you'd better post a message after you get it saying how much it was really worth it.
Good Luck.
