Hello, everyone. I was after a bit of guidanceregarding the maxpedition 10 x 4 bottle holder.

I would like to make a simple nesting kit, and I've seen many positive reviews of it, and not many negative, but the main complaints I have heard are that top zip, to get to your bottle, is hard to open/annoying, and is generally a PITA, and second is that it was a waste of money, due to that first problem. All the reviews did however state that it was of the usual maxpedtion quality. So what is your experiences with these issues? I'd like to hear what you do, and what you don't like about it, so I can decide if its worth it.

JCK,

Hey man I have the 10 X 4 maxped bottle holder and I will tell you it is worth every penny. If fits a a 32 oz. nalgene bottle with room to spare and I even have a 40 oz. Klean Kanteen that I can squeeze in there using a flat top spout on the Kanteen. The zipper can be trickey at times, but because it is a soft, round compartment- I would see you having this issue with any similar product. It is a design issue, that probably cannot be avoided without adding expense to an already expensive water jug holder.

Using it as an extra compartment on your pack is where this thing really shows its value. You can fit a ton of junk in this thing. I think it will even fit a jet-boil unit as well. I have used it as a trash compartment, ice chest, and have carried it alot by itself.

I am even thinking about getting the 12 X 5. Buy the bottle holder. I am sure you have done your research and the zipper is not a deal breaker for me. Typical MaxPed build and quality. Bullet proof in everyway.

I hope this helps.

When it came in the mail, I thought it was cool but not worth the money. After carrying it for a bit: it's very worth the money. Add a strap, and it's a great way to carry a couple hours worth of water and some gear/snacks.

Here's a link to my review of a 10x4 + some nesting gear.

If you need even more space there is also the 'hydrant' from maratac at countycomm. It has a removable sleeve insert in case you want to just use it as an open canvas only bag. Without the sleeve it's large enough to squeeze in (albeit tight) a 2 liter bottle and some cups.

The 12x5 next to it is smaller internally because of the slightly thicker padding that isn't removable, you can't fit a 2 liter into it. After using the 10x4 I replaced it with a 12x5. It will let your 40oz kleen canteen move around a bit, but I'm okay with that since I got it for nesting purposes - I wanted to be able to fit larger propane bottles into it.

My wife and I carry 2 connected (one on each side) of our Maxped backpacks and wouldn't want it any other way.

The quality is top notch and I actually prefer this instead of using a water bladder.

Thanks Steve, your post sure has helped. I guess I shouldn't worry about the zip, as I'm sure I'll get used to it.I just want to make sure I choose the right size, as the 10 x 4 is going to cost at least 40 aussie bucks for me, which is pretty expensive for a bottle holder.

Thanks Michael, your review/nesting kit thing is what got me interested in building something similar, and I figured it would be great for dayhikes, as I don't have much time to go out for longer trips.
However I've been hearing lately that the newer GSI Glacier cups don't fit the klean canteen 40 oz, or the Guyot standard 38 oz, like what you've got, which is bad news if its true :grumpy:

Thanks for the suggestion, and the pics, they really help. Unfortunately I can't get any of CountyComm's items, as they don't do international shipping, shame, as they have so much stuff I want. It also looks pretty big if I were thinking of carrying it as a single peice of kit. How do you find it carrying it on its own?

Thanks TKAZ, for the positive feedback. They seem to be very popular.

Thanks for all the answers everyone.

So now I've just got to decide which bottle I want, I've sent some inquiries off, and it appears I may be able to get the Klean Kanteen 40 oz Wide, within Aus, but the Guyot Standard doesn't appear to be available for sale here, so what do you guys recommend - should I try and hunt down a guyot 38 oz, or get the 40 oz klean kanteen if its available here in Aus? (still waiting for confirmation)

Oh yeah, as to your original question: I don't find the zipper particularly easy, but it's not a bother either. I think the only reason the zipper is considered "difficult" at all is because it is installed in a circle, which makes your direction of pull change constantly (vs. a jacket zipper with a single direction of pull).

Overall, the 10x4 is very well built and does it's job very well.

I understand about the zipper, I guess many people's experiences with the zipper would be the same as yours.

I was just looking at your setup in the link you gave me, could I ask where you got your GSI Glacier bottle cup from? I'm trying to find a good source, that will ship to Aus, yet still fit a klean kanteen 40 oz or the guyot standard in it. I've heard that its changed, and won't fit them anymore.

EDIT: also, are the D-rings metal? I couldn't tell for sure

Definately, I sure will, although sadly I won't be out until around the end of the year, say about novemeber/december - maybe later - as I'm studying fulltime 4 days a week, however I never know, I may have a long weekend pop up somewhere, and with a bit of planning, could get a day hike in somewhere. I do know a few pockets of "wilderness" that I could visit sooner, and I'll try get some photos up next time I visit them. I've also got some time off at the coast planned, so I'll take some photos of that as well.

But I'd love to post up pics of all the different places I visit. (There will even be some of NZ, when I go hiking there)

So it may take a while, but I'll have plenty of photos when i finally get out.

About the Taurus TCP: I still carry it every day. I recently started feeding it Federal Hydra-Shoks (I was carrying FMJ) and not a single hiccup with them yet. It's made in America and looks it compared to their usual Brazilian products.
About the Bottle Holder: I use it about once a month. Any time I'm going to the cabin, car camping, or hiking I have it with me. I was just up at my family's cabin last weekend and I brought it canoeing with me. With the strap attached, you can carry it around like a man purse, then tie it down when you need to.

interesting about using hollow points in .380's. most of the LEO's i know will only use FMJ's to ensure penetration. (i know leo's do not know everything). i guess it was a confidence issue for them. plus fmj's are cheaper :D..thanks for the input on the tcp though.. i refered it to a friend of mine as a competitor over the ruger. Kel Tecs are just hit or miss quality. i hate them

I haven't carried the hydrant pouch because it's green and not really something I would need for edc use. I got it mostly just to have it :p

The 12x5, while more spacious, is really not that much bigger for edc purposes. It's still pretty compact for what you get. I'd have no problem carrying it on a shoulder strap, though it might get a bit heavy on a belt.

These complaints are full of it. I use two Maxpedition 12X5s on a daily basis to carry two 64oz Kleen Kanteens. While the zipper doesn't just fly open with the snap of a finger... I've never found them difficult to open at all. And they are bomb proof as usual with maxpedition stuff. It's a great piece of gear. And two of the 12X5 fit nicely in the main compartment of their Vulture II backpack

The D-rings are plastic. Here is a pic of the 12x5's size and how a kleen kanteen w/loop top fits into it:

The 12x5 isn't very much bigger than the 10x4, it's just enough space to fit taller bottles.

It has about an inch of top space, where with the 10x4 I was pushing the top outward with the cap, making it hard to zip up.
zP1030564-1.jpg

I've added a four by six pouch to the top of this, but this is the 12x5 next to a remora.

In regards to the zippers, most maxpedition zippers require a technique to unzip easily. Because they are so burly they tend to collapse the material around them downward making the feel like they are seizing up - to prevent this you can grab the lanyard pull and pull outward as you unzip. This keeps the fabric taught around the zipper to the front and back and prevents it from seizing.
