Guys, I am just not living right at the moment, way too much time inside (for a variety of reasons), not being outside makes me restless.. The upside is that I have had time to mess with my gear a little. I am a Maxpedition nut, I like their bags for EDC and day packs. Most of my time in the woods these days are day hikes and the versipacks and Devil Dogs work real for that. For hiking, I use a Camelbak Hawg or my Devil Dog with an after-market shoulder strap. I also have a Jumbo Versipack that is with me all the time, it is not really a PSK as much as stuff that I want with me when I am not at home. I have a Remora which smaller and lighter that I am still putting together. Anyways, the Devil Dog (pics below)is my trail companion, I keep a FAK, lots of fire starting stuff, sewing kit, a Sportsman blanket and AMK Bivy for shelter, fiskars saw, wool socks, Timberline Hatchet or TOPS ATAX, and water bag, folded aluminum mini pans, water purification, and a bunch of other junk. You notice it is light on knives, I am waiting for 2 pretty special pieces from Ilbruche and Fiddleback that will hopefuly round out this set-up (I'll post those when they come). Anybody else like Maxpedition?

I love my Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack. It's with me most days and I use it most often for day hikes. I'm in the market for a Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon II. The size looks perfect for what I what. Do you have any experience with this bag?

The kit looks great and I often "round mine out" with a Bark River Fox River or F1.
Thanks for the pics.

Looks like good packs, but damn they are expensive..

Actually, if you do an apples and apples comparison with brands like Osprey, Vaude, Arc'teryx, or Eagle Creek, the Maxpedition rigs aren't too bad. The Pygmy Falcon is for sale on Maxpedition's Web site right now for $78.29. You can barely get in the door at the Patagonia or North Face store for that.

You will have to work really hard to break Maxpedition's gear. If they have a fault, it's the weight. I'm an ultralight hiker and bombproof stuff like theirs is taboo. If you are using it for work or military, it should do the trick.

Vance,

Nice set-up! Is that a Yard Guard?

DaleW,

Yep, anybody who does any amount of hiking has to be aware of weight. I find the Devil Dog (with water) pretty comfortable with the wide strap. Gear is funny that way, if you have everything you want with you, you have a Winnebago strapped to your back! Gotta be selective based on your environment and needs.

Nice rig! Who made the sheath for your Swamp Rat?

I lug my ranger green Condor II around with me daily. Its got so much crap in it that I just can't do without :D

When people pick it up they go, "what they hell have you got in there?" Its a bunch of small stuff (except for the 7,5 inch FB), but it all adds up. I figure if I'm ever in a bag snatch situation, that dude is not gonna get too far.

I recently added two Tactical Tailor canteen pouches to it for my H2O requirements./ Now I just need a chance to give it a real work out on the trail.

For quick trips I use a standard Fatboy.

LA Police Gear has the Pygmy for $49.99 in black, OD, and khaki.

Enter MAX in the coupon code and get 10% off until 1/25.

I have a Digi cam one that I got. I use it as my truck pack, and at the range doing 3-gun shoots.
I love this pack. No better pack for the size or money.

I took it ashore in Jamica on vacation.(what a shithole BTW)

MaxKimber,
Thanks so much for the heads up on the website. I just ordered a green Pygmy Falcon II. The price was what I was willing to spend. I can't wait to get it and break it in.

mneedham,
yes thats a yard guard

Buffalohump,
dwayne @ armoralleather made the sheath for the HRLM

I have the Fatboy in three different versions, Jumbo as well, Pygmy Falcon pictured and have no complaints about any of it. Have a lot more as well. Just about done a lot of evaluations of some of their other stuff as well. Excellent stuff.

So is that pygmy big enough for a small sleeping bag, compressed tent, and some food? if you guys say it's a 3 day bag then you've made my choice. i want to get away from the standard backpacking bags. I jsut don't care for the configuration.

Yes...I will admit to being a Maxpedition FREAK!!!

But mostly I buy the accessories....not the packs.

Favorite so far?

The Neat-Freak

It is awesome....still haven't found a use for each and every pocket....and you gadget freaks out there know the opposite is usually the case!!

if you guys say it's a 3 day bag then you've made my choice.
Maxpedition describes the Vulture II as a 3 day bag, and it's 2 times the capacity of the Pigmy Falcon II (46L Vs. 23L).

I'm looking at their bags too, since I'm extremely satisfied with my Fatboy Versipack, Cocoon/4x6 pouches, and the backpack I use for work begins to give signs of weakness.
I'm still hesitating between the MPB and the Condor II, but that's mostly a fight about the form factor/comfort. More professional look with a MPB, more comfort with the Condor II. If anybody has suggestions about this, I'll be happy to hear them.

Vance,
I wanted to say thanks for the pics. They convinced me that the Maxpedition bag was the right one for me. I can't wait until it arrives.
