Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon review (pic heavy)

Sorry to dig this up but I was wondering if anyone had any long term updates? I just picked up a Pygmy over the weekend myself.

Nice review btw!

Funny enough I just stumbled upon this myself. I ended up with this pack in a trade with myright and couldn't be happier (with the product and the transaction!)

It's a great day pack.....I don't think it would suffice, at least for me, for an overnighter as I'm far from a minimalist and tend to over-pack, but I can see how some could easily utilize it for one. Construction is typical Maxpedition....like a tank. Here's the pack now a days with it's new canine buddy.

I've been edcing one for the past month or two and it really is a great pack. It's a shame I didn't pick one up sooner. Love the deep and integrated bottle mesh holders, simple and efficient compartment layout, and shock cord area outside. I've taken it on a couple of hikes so far, and it's a great daypack, especially if you like bottles over bladders. I'll snap some pics of it set-up for hiking and add specific thoughts later .

I had a pygmy falcon II for a few years. It held up really great. I mostly used it to carry ammo (lots of ammo) on the short hike to my favorite shooting pit. Then it pulled diaper bag duty for the last year or so. I recently traded it for a Maxpedition Sitka and I'm sad I did. So I guess I'm probably in the market for another one.

Funny - that's the same k9 buddy it had at my house as well.

I really love the pack and the design, I just wasn't a huge fan of the color. I'm looking to get another in black. I absolutely love that the zippers go all the way to the bottom of the pack and allow it to open all the way.

Bottle pouches are huge for me, I use them on every pack I own that has them. I really enjoy them on the PFII because you can sinch them down and not have to worry about anything falling out.

It is the best Maxped pack I've ever owned and will probably be the only Maxped pack I'll own.

Question: can you get a weekend in using the falcon 2? This one looks too small, yet I may get one over the sitka. Argh! Decisions, decisions.

I have been using a Falcon II for the past couple semesters at college and it has worked great for that purpose. As far as a weekend pack, I'd overload the pack and it's designed to be loaded light and carried streamlined so I wouldn't use it. If you have a compact sleeping bag and no tent, it could work for a weekend, but I like to carry something a bit roomier with more load support like a North Face Terra 40. If you're into ultralight, this pack is built a little too heavy duty for that purpose. I have the 10X4 water bottle carrier and it allows this pack to function as a perfect day pack with lots of goodies.

I use one of these for short day hikes. Good stuff, and its a bargain at $88.99 MSRP compared to other Maxpedition products. Cheaper elsewhere. I did remove the compression "Y" strap, as I do on all of my Maxpedition gear. Just seems to get in the way.

+1:thumbup:. I love the 3/4 zipper (packing's so easy) and the ability to cinch the bottle holders is an excellent feature. The black is nice too :)

And yeah, I think you'd have to go pretty minimal for a weekend trip, and it'd have to be in warm weather.

I must say that I wish the bottle holders we're just a tad bigger. I have to really work to get my Kleen Kanteen in there when its nested in a SS cup...and getting it out is even a bigger PITA.

Thanks a lot man! I am looking in to a daypack and I was leaning toward a regular Falcon, but the Pygmy may be just the ticket. :D

But then again, I can cinch the Falcon down and have the ability to expand and more MOLLE. Ahh decisions.

Nm, I assumed you were using a GSI cup.

Still love mine and it is still going strong after a couple of years. Very durable pack. It has ended my search for daypacks, that's for sure.
