Does anyone have a Maxpedition Sabrecat?

I know it's supposed to be a Proteus on 'roids. I was looking at the sizes of the compartments, and it looks like it can carry as much as the shoulder bag I've been using (which, if I don't pig out, can carry enough for a weekend in the woods during the late spring - early fall months.

Living in FL, where it's about 6 million degrees and 12,000% humidity int he summer, wearing a waistpack would be real nice to keep the torso ventilated.

Also, it looks like the waistbelt has PALs webbing. Is this so? Looks like a great place to put my canteens/cups.

Main compartment: 10” x 7” x 4”, internal divisions with two 7” x 4” loop fields

Frontal: 7” x 7” x 1.5”, internal division with key retention

Sides: 7” x 4” x 2.5” with mesh division

Top: 9” x 4” x 1” with elastic organizer, division, mesh pocket

PALS attachment webbing: Front, sides

Attach: Fits long Malice clips in rear (sold separately)

Waist belt: Padded hip support with adjustable 2” waist belt for up to 56” waist; concealable

Due to popular demand, we did a supersized variant of our bestselling Proteus™ Versipack™ with many added features.

Subscribed. In addition to being cooler, waistpacks are easier on my bad back, and I'm finding my CTD bag just isn't quite...big...enough.

"If only I had this much more room, I could carry everything I need..."

The padded belt looks like a real plus, too.

Edit question: I wonder if a 1L nalgene could be squeezed into one of the side pockets. That and my camera would take two bulky items off my existing (crowded) belt. Cuz I couldn't just use a smaller bottle (duh)...

From the looks of it at 7" x 4" x 2.5", you may be able to stuff one in there, but it wouldn't be fully contained.
I'd plan to put my canteens on the PALs webbing of the belt.

Maxpedition lost its appeal for me when they went up in price.

I just cant see paying $120+ for a BOB.

Personally, I find that a butt pack this large, when fully loaded, gives me a pain in the back unless I put some shoulder straps on it.

YMMV.

I think some lb suspenders would be a plus. I am not a big fan of buttpacks w/o suspenders, I think fully loaded it would pull your pants down and hurt your back....

Looks good to me. I carry a remora now, and I like it a lot.

I think that Maxpedition's pricepoint is a little off. I will say I am intrigued with this particular versipack. I have a proteus, and it would get used more if it carried a bit more. I will admit to not having the money to buy some of the attachments that might make it tollerable. Right now I am looking for something to fill the gap between my 40 Liter North Face Solaris and my REI transit bag. The Proteus does the comfort thing well, but doesn't carry all the gear I would want it too. I have thought of the Monsoon, if I can find a good deal on the Sabrecat I might go for it. I wish Spec Ops and Eagle had some more options, their prices are a bit better.

I have used heavy buttpacks with suspenders also but then my brain keeps saying, if you have a heavy buttpack and it needs suspenders then why not just get a small backpack?

I hate that they don't sell it as a duffle bag. I never used the butt pack straps. Eventually I cut them off. A pocket over there would be useful rather than wasting an entire side for the stupidass straps.

Depending on who you're with, that could be fun!
But seriously, I don't know what you guys carry, but like I mentioned, it should carry about as much as the shoulder bag I use now (the shoulder bag is slightly larger that the SC's main compartment, but has no other compartments), and loaded with enough food for 2 days (SPAM cans at that -- compact but heavy), plus 2 1-qt canteens weighs in at about 16 pounds with water. I don't think that'll break the back or rip my pants down, plus if I want, I could use my old shoulder strap and carry it as a shoulder bag if I wanted.

Well, you could always stow the belt, and attach another bag on the PALS webbing on the back, maybe like a Kifaru long pocket.

What I will do if I get it, is cut off the horizontal compression straps, they look like uddes on a bull. The vertical straps, unlike the MilSpecMonkey, I think they are a plus, as I do use such to attach a bedroll.

Jeez, here I go talking myself into it. . .

Saves me the effort.

I think the Proteus is supposed to be MALICE clipped to the SC for the duffel bag option... :p

As a "one of many" bag, I'd probably balk at the cost. But short of a multi-night outing (not this year, for sure), this thing looks like it will (might?) be my "only" bag for some time.

Agree on the compression straps. My current rig lacks useable under-storage, which I can use, and I'm more concerned with the bulk sticking out towards the back than the sides.

I wish the PALS loops went further around the belt, though.

I use a Max Devil Dog and fully loaded it can get heavy and some sort of shoulder strap is a plus. I like it better than a small backpack because it carries lower and doesn't get my back all sweaty. It's also easier to maneuver with when bushwacking is called for. I also like the fact that most of the weight is on the belt and not my shoulders. Personal preference I guess, ymmv.
