I work in IT for a city library system. In 2004 I lost a old molded clip Delica (circa 1996) down the elevator shaft in one of our 19 locations. That building was struck by lightning in early 2006 and due to the damage (and inefficiencies in the 110 year old building) had to be closed permanently. We retain the lease on it until the end of this year at which time we have to be out of the site. I have always wanted to get into the shaft to look for it and next week i'll have my opportunity. The elevator has not been serviced since it closed and i'm hoping nobody serviced it in the 18 months or so that the knife was in there. I'll update the boards with the findings. everybody wish me luck.

Hope you find it. That will be a happy day if it's still in there. Remember to take some pics throughout the process :)

Good luck.

I was pulling a steel cart loaded with heavy items when the lip of the handle pulled on the clip. Out of my pocket it went and it was a one-in-a-million shot right through the crack between the car and the floor. I was beside myself. I had taken that Delica to the west coast that included a 3 day stay in Yosemite. I'll take pics for sure.

Bring a dust mask, since it will be filthy and dusty down there.

Bring a headlamp so you can maneuver.

Take an expendable stick along, incase you have to poke around in questionable corners, or under trash.

good luck man.
Lost a knife on a mountain in the whites once.
Found it a year later, rusted but still functional. Good thing I kept it very well oiled :D
Gave it away to my cousin though, so no pics unless someone wants to come to my house and scan the disposables into my computer.

And a magnet for retrieving lost screws.

Heck you might find the Lindburg Baby or Jimmy Hoffa, never know with elevator shafts.

It'll be a sweet story if you manage to get your knife back. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens. Good luck!

I have one here, that has a 3" 'floor-sweep' magnet on it, and it extends out to 36". I also have a 5' wooden stick that has a hook in one end. Both have been very handy for reaching things in places I can't get into.

Good luck! Keep us posted.
