I have done a whole bunch of trades and buys from the great folks here like Benchmademan, REN, Glockwrks, etc. but I am now in the middle of a trade (both items have been placed in the mail) where the other party is threatening to disperse my email address because he is angry that I used the USPS click n's ship auto-notify with his email address without his "permission". I guess I just don't get it... I am very sensitive to email addresses and keeping spam out of my accounts - but using UPS or the USPS auto-notify for package delviery is just about at the bottom of my list of potential problems...

I guess i'm just frustrated at the sudden hostility as I have found this board to be a great friendly FUN place... :(

I am interested to follow this...

I have a trade partner who has used this before, and when I got those notification emails it never even occurred to me that it was a problem. I mean hell, our info is all over the place anyway..

The real deal is this, going to the PO to mail something is such a profound pain in the xss that having this option sounds great. Point, Click, and they pick it up. Works for me.

I am looking into it myself....

The truth is - its not a problem - its actually a great way to be a PRO-ACTIVE shipper - I use it for all of my ebay transactions and out of 142 feedbacks - all are positive and never has a red flag been raised. I work in IT and I deal with spam filtering and email issues all day long. The USPS email notification just isn't an issue.

Which is why I feel very frustrated with this situation. Threatening to send my email address to "others" doesn't seem like a rational response.

Sounds like you traded with somebody who has the mentality of a spoiled 3 year old.

I would impress upon him that you certainly meant no harm, but if he continues his childish behavior and threats that he will be named on BF (I am assuming he is active here) and his trading days will be numbered.

You obviously don't want to mention this other persons name, but I would be very interested in knowing about someone that would so totally over-react.

Yeah - I guess I just don't want to out someone who is maybe having a bad day or something. If he pushes the issue I will post his info here.

Here is the edited exchange so far. I've been trying to stay cool.

Well, I apologize, but I would offer this advice for the future: A
simple "hey ross - I really wish you hadn't given my address out" would
be a lot more appropriate than threatening to disperse my address at
random. I simply don't understand the sudden hostility. The email
address is entered into an online form that auto emails a status update
- its not entered into an address book or database. As I said
previously, I was simply trying to make sure you had up to date info on
the arrival of your package. If you are upset enough to warrant
canceling the trade, simply deny delivery of the Becker and I will do
the same. Let me know.

Yes, serious.

This individual sounds like a real mental case...... :barf:

If you're lucky they will refuse shipment, you can return whatever it was that they sent you, and then I would write them off as a complete waste of time and effort, never to be dealt with again!

If this basketcase does spam your email address, please let all of us know who this jerk is so that it will save others the fate of having to deal with a complete idiot. :grumpy:

He better stay off ebay. Most of the items I have bought has had this auto email thing.Doesn't bother me.

He may be overreacting based on a legitimately bad experience. You all know how frustrating spammers can be. And not everyone is a cyber wizard, able to evaluate which parties out there will give out their info where it isn't a good idea.

Instead of insulting him (if he's one of us, as seems likely, he can read all this, too) he would be better served by a calm explanation that this is a mechanically, automatically, neutral notification that won't get him on any unwanted lists.

I get tracking data from everyone that sends me UPS, which means UPS has my name & address, and who I buy from. I can't be worried about this if I'm going to deal online.

First time I have heard of anyone having a problem with divulging an email address to a shipper. I personally like the notifications.

SPAM and other email is a fact of life these days and I just use a blocker plus the old "delete" button.

Sting, you certainly separate yourself from a lot of sellers by providing ship notification. This chap saw your actions negatively and that's his problem, not yours. You were only acting on his behalf (or so you intended). Forget about him; most of us truely appreciate when a seller goes the extra mile.

Silliest threat I've ever heard. He's soooo concerned about his e-mail address getting out. Doesn't he realize you can retaliate if he releases yours ? Spoiled 3 year old was an accurate diagnosis.

In this day and age, it makes sense to protect your email identity. Lots of folks use throwaway email ids for just this reason. I keep multiple email ids and let Outlook gather up all my email at once. I always use an "alias"... not a fake name in the negative sense, but a mailbox that I use in instances where I expect to end up with junk mail as a result. I set Outlook to screen or filter out everything that goes to that id. If it becomes too poluted, I just discard it.

At a minimum, its up to each of us to protect our own turf, not up to everyone else. If you don't want your email address shared, get an alias.

BTW, forums are (or at least used to be) crawled to find email addresses. Thats why sometimes you'll see addresses listed as soandso at alpern.net for example. No @ sign and it can't be detected as an email address.

I've had someone or two do that to me.

IMO, ask first, before using someones email in anything like that.
