Maybe I'm just being weird about this. What are your thoughts?

We don't always read a whole thread before we jump to conclusions and pitch in.

[I just read your original post, not having done so before pitching in. I think you were clear that you love the knife.]

Just had a 10 minute conversation with Bill (which is a long time for him to stand still). He did confirm my previous assumption to the reasoning. The wood hardness varies from grain to grain and he doesn't like that veined look when some buffs away faster than others.

I have had a few Ironwood GEC’s and can confirm that they do look much better when polished. All wood looks best when polished, but Ironwood has a very formal look that really benefits from a smooth, shiny surface. You can see deeper into the wood grain when it is polished. I usually end up selling off the matte fisnished Ironwood knives.

Funny you should mention that.

I just pulled out my Whaler and took this picture.

You're EXACTLY right!

I just got this Desert Ironwood #54 Big Jack off of Ebay. I'm absolutely in love with it, but the wood is much shinier than my other two Desert Ironwood GECs. I'm just slightly confused as to why it would have a shine to it when the other two have a much more obvious matte/satin finish.

What are your thoughts, ye wise and all-mighty Blade Forums? ^_~

Maybe my inexperienced self just doesn't know about wood finishes. Or maybe I'm just crazy. Or both...

Happy Holidays all! :]

Sincerely,

~ Sparkly G. ♡
Very nice collection there.

PS: I'm not saying you should do this and it might be a night mare to do with the shield and the polished bolsters . . . and I fully realize you like it just the way it is . . .

A custom furniture person would take a little wax and some very fine steel wool (#0000) and rub the wood. It would knock the shine back to semi gloss. I have never worked with desert ironwood. If the consensus is that wax is not needed with this wood then perhaps just the steel wool.
