Maybe settling?

Tony: we were simply amazed. Even during the banquet we had some pretty major players coming up and wishing us well and just wanting to shake our hands. I was truly humbled. There are some damn good folks in this industry.

Chiller2: To Justin's credit he had some experiences in the past that has influenced his business decisions in a major way. I would just about bet Justin has protected himself pretty good in this deal with Ontario. I agree with you though, let's hope Ontario really recognizes what they have in Justin and applies the best quality and customer service to this new line.

I wouldn't write off Ranger yet. They're good proven designs. If Ontario can produce a product of equal or better quality, then more power to them. Hopefully Ontario learned something from this, too - i.e. clearly spell out what you want in the contract, don't take what's not yours, keep communications honest and open, etc. etc. etc. or your users and customers will get P.O.ed. If Ontario can make good, then some forgiveness is in order, IMHO.

About the deal itself, I wonder how much they value Justin's military credentials as part of the package. Not to disparage qualifications of any of the people behind RAT, but it's real easy to put "Designed by U.S. Army Ranger" in an ad campaign, and the military market has been super hot since 9/11.

I saw Justin at Blade and I did a complete double-take at his table. I barely recognized his knives- everything I saw was much fancier than what he brought last year. Almost everything was satin finished, with mosaic pins and micarta handles. He may be trying to move his personal knives upscale, and let Ontario make the bread-and-butter tactical stuff. Not a bad idea, it seems he is interested in advancing his craft, rather than being tied down to mass producing the knives he has already become known for.

If I had more money, I would have picked up one of his new customs, they were nice, and reasonably priced.

I know what you mean I wasn't sure if it was the same Ranger knives at first I don't think I saw any of his basic designs of course they may have already sold when I went by.

For what its worth, Justin may have had this deal nailed down for a while. Rat Cutlery first posted their troubles with ontario here on 3/16 I beleive. I remember asking Justin on the Ranger forums around the middle of february about the entry tool because I noticed that it was temporarily unavailable. He mentioned that it would probably be available around mid year, which I am willing to bet that this is when he expected it to be available from Ontario. After this news became available at blade, I have to believe that this move has been in the works for a while. Not sure if it was finalized by that point, but I am willing to bet that that they were close to it.
