Maybe this is a stupid question . . .

No, they should not come with rust. You can use metal polish to get the rust out, depending on how deep it is. There are many different kinds of polish, Flitz, Metal-glo, IOSSO will all do the trick.

If you can't find any metal polishes then shoot me an email and I will send you a tube.

I haven't heard great things about Brasso and khuks, but I've never used it myself.

BE VERY CAREFUL SHEATHING THE MOVIE MODEL!! They are know for penetrating the sheath when putting it away. It will easily bite you if you are not careful. Read the Safety thread and really be aware of where the sharp parts of the khuk are EVEN IN THE SHEATH.

Personally, I villagerize(satin finish) all my khuks that came with a mirror finish. I usually buy villagers for that reason, even my falcata has a villager finish from HI. As far as I know it is the only one like that.

I should add another metal polish is MAAS. You can normally find metal polishes in automotive stores, or the automotive section..I think wal-mart has MAAS and Metal-glo if that helps you any.

A green Scotch-Brite pad will take the mirror finish off and put a nice satin finish on... and if/when you get rust, it'll remove it, clean it (sap etc.) and re-satinize.

Becomes a cycle. I'm going to try a coating on my next.

i just checked the pic..that is too bad, and could've been avoided...you could try using the scotch brite pad with some WD-40 that usually does the trick on all but the worst. it'll leave a brushed looking or "satin"finish. for the worst/deep spots you may want to get yourself a buffing wheel and some diamond rosin and rouge. use the diamond rosin to take all the rust off and the rouge to restore the mirror finish....just be careful around the handle so you don't damage it.

REMEMBER FOLKS>> after fondling/using your kukri....always clean it and put a light coating of WD or other non spoiling oil on the blade. high carbon steel develops rust rather easily.

Tyr, I did some "research" and found who the seller was.
I don't understand why you haven't posted about this in the GB&U. Other members here need to be warned about transactions with this guy. I know I would not buy from him if this is his M.O.

I use a ceramic stick on my kukri blades, followed by the kukri's own smoothing steel.
If a bit more sharpening was needed there's the pen-type of diamond file, followed by the above.

Or you could use various grades of silicon carbide sandpaper wrapped around a length of dowelling, or flat on a firm foam pad.

Best wear sturdy leather gardening gloves while sharpening though.
I forgot last week and ended up with three sticking plasters!

...What is the best way to sharpen this style of khukri? I've never owned one before and don't want to accidentally ruin it. ...
Is the edge (such as it is) formed from two flat surfaces forming a "V" OR is it formed from two curved surfaces that meet ("convex")?

WD40 is a water-displacement material ( the 40th formulation tried) and relatively poor in creating a film to prevent rust. Mineral oil, 3-in-1, or "gun oil" would be better for rust prevention.

My supply of mineral oil is about to slip from my grip, but a vast quantity still exists.

The cat is even starting to dry out...

Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish is an old favorite here, as is Simichrome.
Even toothpaste will work as a very mild abrasive.

Seaice, what's a "sticking plaster?" Do you happen to be another friend across the big pond that lives in the UK? ;) :D

Thanks, Nasty.... that's it.
Mind you, I'm so out of date I had originally typed "elastoplast" but changed it to "sticking plaster" hoping that's what they were called in the USA.

Do you happen to be another friend across the big pond that lives in the UK?
Indeed so, Yvsa... now living in Cumbria (in the NW of England), but I'm from Scotland.
