Maybe you can tell me why... assisted openers...

I don't like using thumbstuds for AOs [assisted openers] in general, so I consider the lack of a flipper a design flaw.

I couldn't agree more, so why do I ask, do they make knives only with thumb studs? A hole like Spydercos, or a hole/slot like Gerber's Ezy-Out is better than a stud, but, still... they both suck if the blade whips out when you have all the force trying to open the knife moving in the same direction that is with the blade.

Now... a while back, I was trying to open my old, Gerber Ezy-Out Jr. and slit my thumb from mid-to-top and I would just have to agree with Art on this one.

A perfect example of the assisted opener is the Kershaw Leek...

Opinions welcome...

I completely agree. I love the flipper so that I can have a firm grasp on the handle between my thumb and middle finger. Kershaw, Camillus, and SOG have the best assisted opening mechanisma I have tried. The shape and size of my hands make it hard for me to use a thumb stud and still maintain a good hold on the handle.

I really am not comfortable trying to open my Spyderco Kopa or Mini Persian with my thumb. The Kopa is too small to be able to make the flip....I already chewed into the tip of one finger. The Mini Persian is too stiff. I just open them like a slipjoint.

As far as studs, I have a really nice Kershaw/Kai Nakamura that the studs are just plain irritating. They are sharp at the tip and stick out too far. Someday I'm going to see if I can't find some smaller replacement studs for it or dremel the bastards down.

If you're careful, any of the methods to open the knives are fine.

If you're not careful, any of the methods to open will bite you.

I've been using my Gerber EZ-Out for 5 years, and no problems to report.

The only time I've gotten bit (and very lightly) was when I was fooling around with it.

blade_guy, I do agree with the "fooling" theory, but still, even if you're responsible, and do not play around with the opening... it's still a pain in the @$$ with those stupid studs. And often-times, they're too close to the actual pivoting-point to get good leverage to open it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one...

P.S. blade, what do you think of your EZ-Out man? I hated my Jr. I didn't like the blade steel.

I have stiffness in my hands, age, and pounding too many nails in my youth, but I can open my Leek like I'm 20-something. It speaks to the design, top notch!

I agree you need that flipper on the back. I have never been "bit" or had a problem with thumbstuds like on the blurr or Nakamura or however you spell it. But the flippers are so much nicer and natural to open with. Buck also uses a flipper dont forget about them. I like kershaws setup like on the leek and bump the best, Heck my Gunhammer has a flipper and I love that about it. Yeah the more I think about it, why in the heck do they use thumbstuds. If your wearin gloves especially and you already have somewhat less of a grip on the handle and your tryin to get ahold of the studd.....I shudder at the thought. Keep on puttin on the flipper.
