Mayo/Buck Pictures

Soooooo, since it appears you own both, is it as good as a real Mayo, or is it more like low-fat Miracle Whip? If it's not as good, why not, what exactly is better on the Real Mayo? Of course im not expecting it to be nearly as good, but im certainly interested to hear how they differ.

Im particularly interested to know: How is lockup, does the lock engage the blade fully, but with lots of room to wear to the right? Is there any blade play? Is the blade centered in the handle when closed? How are the edge grinds? Is the action smooth? I know this is an awful lot to expect from a production knife, but, this is a pretty expensive production knife.

How is lockup- very good

does the lock engage the blade fully, but with lots of room to wear to the right? Yes

Is there any blade play? No

Is the blade centered in the handle when closed? Mine is slightly off center, but not touching wither liner.

How are the edge grinds? Good and even

Is the action smooth? yes

Thanks for sharing, mschwoeb.

:D :D :D

Thanks for the quick reply and info, if you dont mind me asking, what did you pay for it?

Thanks for the pics.:) It looks like it will do well for Buck as long as the QC is on the upside.

Thanks for the pics. May I ask where you purchased yours, and more importantly, do they have any left?

I bought mine from Larry Oden. He recieved his first shippment of pre-ordered blades this week and shipped them all out. You can try to contact him and get on his list for the next shippment though.

OK, since mine isn't here yet, I wanna know this: how does it compare to the sebenza?

Mano, got to the buck forum and in the Mayo thread there's an email address foir Larry.

It's now 1145am EST, the mail man should be here in an hour to 3 hour range. Rest assured, I am stationed near the window and will charge him as soon as I see that white truck:D

Yes BG, but be careful, it might be the "other" white truck, if so, can i have all your knives, i promise to visit you, make light conversation, and turn you towards the window... :)

LOL, I already got it about 10 min. ago!!!! Give me some time to play with it and I'll give you my review. Very nice!!!:)

Now we need larger models though!!!!!!!! I think Mr.Mayo said he was already working on the next one with Buck, I could be mistaken

OK, I'll go ahead and give my impressions.

The handles are a little thinner than a sebenza and the edges are a little more crisp. The handles in half moon contoured as opposed to the flat sided sebenza.

The oval opening hole works ok, by I think the round spydie hole is better.

The blade opens smoothly though it doesn't fly open, there is some resistance. The Lockup seems fine as has been previously mentioned.

The biggest thing is that with the sebenza I place my index finget just below and slightly behind the pivot point. It feels very comfortable there. And I am probably used to it.

With the Buck/Mayo it doesn't seem quite as comfortable due to the handles being more slender you can feel two separate contact points from each side.

If I back off a finger width, my index finger curls around the lock cutout, which is more comfortable, but feels unatural because there is another 3/4 of an inch of handle out front of my hand.

The sebenza has ridges on the top of the blade and the blade is raised above the level of the handle and again I thumb feels quite happy there.

On the Buck/Mayo my thumb rests on the handle edges as they are raised above the blade. I feel two distinct pressure points on the thumb.

So in summary, is this a nice knife? Yes. Is it worth $195 (less if you're a club member) Probably.

Ok, first complaint, I can't even get it to clip over a shirt pocket, let alone a pair of jeans. I may have to geth a pair of pliers and a screwdriver to get a little clearnce between the blade and the clip.

Is that intentional?

I can't even get it to clip over a shirt pocket

Sounds like yours is a little tight. Mine is tight, but will clip ok to jeans. Just go ahead an bennd it slightly, should be ok.

Even on Mayo's customs the clips have trouble getting over the pocket lip on my jeans. Also the clips don't hold well. The Sebenza clip is more refined and performs better.

OK, a quick line or two about my initial impressions. When I got the knife out of the box today I had mixed emotions. The knife as far as performance is exceptional. My major complaint isn't really with the design or execution. It's the size. I hope one of the future collaborations with Buck is for a Larger model. I like BIG knives myself. Besides the size factor which is not that big of a deal. The only other problem I had was the blade on my knife had 2 scratches on it right out of the box. At first it bothered me, then I realized its more of a blessing. Now its a user instead of a safe queen. The size I mentioned earlier makes it a perfect secondary EDC in my right pocket opposite my Lrg. Mayonized Sebenza. As for the comparison everyone has asked about. Personally: Sm. Sebenza VS Buck Mayo I would take the Buck Mayo, But if it was a Lrg. Sebenza VS Buck Mayo I would have to go with the Lrg. Sebbie strictly due to size. I DO love the knife and plan on getting a second one to store away. And as mentioned, if there is a larger model in the works, I will be first in line:)
