Mayo: Small Wharny Covert CF

Maker: Tom Mayo (www.mayoknives.com)
Size: Small
Blade: 6K
Blade Length: 3" shy
Overall Length: 6 5/8"
Weight: 1.7 oz

A rustproof folder as the blade is 6k, screws+pivot are Ti, lock side scale is Ti, front scale is carbon fiber.
For me, it's a "tactical" gentleman's folder.

I haven't seen many Mayo knives I didn't like.
Whenever I see one, I am reminded of a surfboard;):)
This one is very sweet.

That is a sweet little Covert. I wouldn't call it a Wharny either. I LOVE the Covert, it is a sweet, sweet Mayo!! CONGRATS!

..... am hard pressed to find ANYTHING that I dislike more than the trend to have synthetic material on one side of a knife, and a naked frame lock on the other......it is like a dude wearing a fedora, nice shirt, necktie and baggy shorts with flip flops......or a woman with a smokin butt, and NO boobs....it just ain't right....imesfho.

Besides the fact that Strider popularized it...any experienced and popular maker INCLUDING my bud, Tom, want to explain WHY this is done?

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

the only thing i can think of is slight weight reduction, though i dont see it really effecting anything. Looks like a nice carry piece

I expect that carbon fiber is less than half the weight of titanium and probably 2/3 the weight of aluminum. While aluminum could be anodized to look really similar to the titanium scale, it will never be as cool as carbon fiber:)

I personally don't have a problem with this kind of folding knife construction, and in the case of this knife it makes sense, as weight savings are obviously the priority. I'd love to carry that little knife in my pocket.

I see that the weight is 1.7oz, I bet with a full ti handle it would be over 2oz.

Great looking little folder! Just curious, does the hole in the carbon fiber scale have a purpose?

I agree with you. Even though I recently ordered 2 knives constructed like that (with natural handle material however - mammoth ivory). In my humble opinion I think even if you make a frame lock, the lock side could easily be covered by a handle slab.

As for this folder: I like the size/shape of it. And judging from the pics it looks very well made. The little guy in the last pic seems to be very happy with it!:D:thumbup:

Kind regards,

Jos

I prefer this design over having titanium on both sides. It doesn't show scratches or wear and makes the knife lighter. Larry

Fantastic knife. The little guy is happy cause he’s thinking this will be mine when I get older. That’s where it starts- sharing your hobbies.

Thanks for sharing. Nice photos as always.

If you keep it up I’ll have to get a Mayo for myself and see first hand how nice they are.
