I've never owned a folding knife with a thumb hole for opening, but I do own several that have thumb lugs.

How well does the thumb hole work - what are your preferences?

Thanks

ive never had a mayo tnt... but i have owned a strider sng and do own an smf that have the oval thumb hole... i actually prefer it to thumbstuds because you can open it with a pointer finger and thumb flick... very fast.

the hole works excellent, Spyderco has built an entire company on the thumb hole. I prefer the hole to the thumbstuds. TNT's are awesome knives worth every penny.

I like the thumb holes better than thumbstuds, easier to operate for me and they don't get in the way either. Tom Mayo's folding knives open smooth and nice, and he makes them with thumb hole or thumb stud. Just pick your flavor, you won't regret it :)

I have a Buck/Mayo TNT, and it is easy to open!! I like thumb holes. They are very easy to use. And I am sure that the REAL Mayo TNT is wicked smooooooooth!!!!! You will be very happy with it!!

I have two TNT's, an SnG, and about 30 Spydies. The thumb hole, round or oval, works great.

I like them both, but probably prefer the hole a bit over the stud!

....,Oh wait......,we're talking knives here.......:D
Well....,still the same!!!

I prefer the hole to the stud when, both are ideal or, all things are equal so to speak. However, when all things are not equal then my preference will change.

As an example, the Spyderco "Stretch", "Military" and "D'Allara" are specific models that open and operate superbly smooth and easy. I am sure other Spydies do as well however, the other Sypdies that I own (about 10) do not quite equal the effortless ease of the three models above.

My RSK Ritter (Griptilian) employs the thumbstud and, also opens effortlessly and securely. I have handled (but do not own) a Chris Reeve Sebenza that was sooooo smooth and secure in operation. These I slightly prefer to those "other" 10 Spydercos that I own.

All, just my opinion of course and, your mileage may vary.

Mayo does thumb hole and stud on his TNT's and also does a disc on his TMX's. But no matter which you pick, he does them all well.

I have had both and handled the TMX and they all open effortlessly. That said I still think I prefer the hole, although these days my EDC tactical is a mini Wharncliff TNT Covert with studs and I like it a lot.

Find some, handle them and buy one, you won't regret it.

I prefer the hole. Don't own a TNT, but have handled 'em a couple of times, and thought that everything worked great. It is not a knife that I would object to owning, to say the least.

Got that right ! :D

Thanks everyone.

I own a Sebenza, Lochsa, Obenauf and a TMX - all thumbstuds. I also tend to prefer tip-up carry.

I'm looking to part with the TMX and go with the Stellite blade, but am still dithering over thumbhole and thumb lugs.

Thanks to your input, I'm leaning towards thumbhole ...

Well, that's why i'm parting with the TMX - it's tip-down (my fault for not specifying when I:grumpy: ordered).

i own a bunch of mayo knives

tom makes nice thumb studs but i prefer his rectangular opening hole. i find it much easier to use than the round hole spyderco uses.

i am a tip down fan though...but i'm a lefty... so go figure :p :p :p

A tip down fan here too :) And I'm right handed.
I know most people prefer tip ups but they make me nervous. Each time I grab for the knife I'd have to check if the tip is still inside the handle and not besides it waiting for my unsuspecting hand. :D

Buy the Mayo, you'll neber regret the purchase of any of Tom's knives. I've had probably 40 of them, and each one was as close to perfect as any folder I've ever seen.

I only have 2 of Tom's knives and have always liked a hole opener.I do like a thumb disk as well,I'm easy:) .If I have a choice I go tip up,like this one.
