Hi, I am looking at purchasing a basic series Mcusta knife. I saw one posted on a thread here and it caught my eye. I was just wondering how the quality/ fit and finish of the knives are. Is the liner lock secure? Any information about this company or their knives would be great. Thanks in advance,

- Jay

I've owned quite a few.The F&F were always superb & they always came razor sharp out of the box,w/zero blade play. The liner lock was secure as a liner lock could be.

They tend to be smaller than they look in the photos.

F&F was well beyond anything I've seen in a production folder. Some of the most beautiful production work ever.

I'm annoyed at their decision to not offer pocket clips on many models, however.

Anyway, they're a small niche sort of knife company, but they're absolutely brilliant at what they do.

I own about 10 (maybe more, I should count someday) Mcustas and think they're the bomb. The basic series is a great value in an EDC. Call it an EDC between a light duty tactical and gentleman's knife.

I have to respectfully disagree with Artfully Martial in that you can get the pocket clip version of almost every model they make. All but some of the specially carved and adorned models.

Fit and finish is superb, the blade work is astounding for a sub $100 production knife and the steel is fantastic. Razor sharp out of the box and they carry as deeply as any knife I know of due to their clip design. The Tactility models offer left and right clip configuration as well.

Go for it!

try japaneseknivesdirect.com. they carry a very good selection. i agree with leek on availability of clips. the basic folder series is offered in many colors, with or without clips. their gentlman series too. if the knives have clips no nylon sheaths. if no clips you get a nylon sheath.

good fit/ finish. the basic is a great small folder. vg-10.

artfullymartial is correct in their blades are smaller or sleeker then they look in the pics. although i don't know about their tactical series.

try look/see the seki-cut brand also. their bob lum designed linerlock is a bit larger. d2.

Thanks for the info guys. The Seki Cut brand looks nice too. The reason Im looking is because I'm getting married in June and I want to give each of my groomsmen a nice knife as part of their grooms gift. I have three all together and two of them are in law enforcement so I think a nice knife would be fitting. I'm looking for more of a nice EDC knife and nothing too heavy duty. I still have time before I need to get them anything so I'm thinking I may pick up a Mcusta for myself to test out ;) :D

+1!
amazing knife. the one I have has set my standards really high regarding folders.

ps. 100 posts!!:D

You might also look up Browning Ice Storm knives. They were made by Mcusta as well. They were the ones that got interested in the brand. (Mcusta, that is.)

thx - cpr

I'm with JTR on this one:thumbup: An excellent Japanese folder that's well worth the price. I have four Mcustas and love them all. Great fit and finish, and razor sharp out of the box. Several years ago i had a basic Mcusta folder with VG-10 blade and brown micarta handle when I went to the mountains with the family. My daughter who was five at the time caught 4 rainbow trout, all 12-15 inches long and that Mcusta cleaned 'em and made fillets out of 'em without batting an eye.

The Browning Ice Storms are discontinued but CDNN still has several versions for under 30 bucks, great way to test the MCusta water...

My latest Mcusta. I think they rival other higher priced production knives in terms of materials and construction.

I had never heard of these. What a great looking knife! And the price is reasonable, I'm glad these were brought up.

I own 2 Ice Storms and these are brilliant knives. Border line between tactical and a gentleman's knife really. Extremely well made and they use VG10 pretty much exclusively. Very cool uber factor to them. keepem sharp

I saw a Mcusta Tactical Elite in one of the EDC Eternal Threads, and have had my eye on it ever since. The Damascus blades listed in the NGK links above are stunning as well.

The Mcustas are lovely and would make great gifts, but if you ask for a recommendation in this forum, you'd get at least 30 different answers!

Personally I would recommend this Kershaw Leek, which you can get laser engraved from KnifeWorks: http://bit.ly/8ryC

I love the Leek...I have tons of them and would recommend one in heart beat.

However, the OP specifically asked about Mcusta knives.

I have six Seki-Cut Bob Lum's too. three small and three large. Nice knices as well. The blade work is just as fine as Mcusta and they work very well. I think the Mcusta is a bit more refined but I carry a large Seki-Cut Bob Lum with the gray Micarta scales often.

Japanesekknivesdirect.com will ship straight from Japan for $7 and I get them in 3 days to Reno.

I own a couple of the Tactility models. The Corian and the black Micarta. This knife is my favorite Mcusta. It's somewhat larger than the basic series and I like the D hole too.

I like the Corian a bit more than the Micarta and I really like Micarta . . .
