I like the Spyderco Bushcraft at $90 if you can snag one.

Other then that maybe the Koster in 3V.

well all of those are good, but i didnt see any Fiddlebacks are under consideration, those just look great IMO. they arent too badly priced, considering they are customs.

If you have been studying bushcraft, want to learn more, and are interested in buying a bushcraft knife, then by all means get a Scandi grind knife! Anything else, while being a capable knife, is not a 'bushcraft' knife. I just purchased the first true bushcraft knife I have ever had and was a little bit worried about getting a scandi grind. After having it, it is outstanding! I love it. It's my new favorite knife. I bought a kit on Ebay a while back that came from a custom maker in the UK. Name was James Noble knives. All it needed was a handle and it was a fun project. I'm really happy with the way it turned out. The blade is wicked sharp and especially for a beginner, it is easy to sharpen. The hardest thing to do when sharpening your own knives is getting the bevel consistent and true. Well, with a scandi grind it is a piece of cake because the surface area of the grind is so large it sets flat on a stone very easily. No guess work! I find it is the easiest to maintain. I like it so much, I just ordered a Spyderco Bushcraft. They are down to less than 30 and at this rate you only have a few days at best to buy one before they are gone. I welcome the cracked handles. It will be a nice project as well as a good knife to beat the heck out of. If you are looking for something to use and not sit on a shelf or in a drawer, then by all means get the Spyderco before its too late!!!! That's my vote anyway.

what about a liten Bror!!!!!!!!!!!! you should see how amazing they cut! just ask my finger

Holy shit dude I can' imagine how much that hurt! That's half way to amputated! And the bone... ouch

I'm ordering the Skifa now since there's over a year wait.

Charles is offering A2 or D2. Normally I'd go D2, but for a bushcraft knife A2 might be better....?
:confused::confused::confused:

i vote for the koster. they are amazing. also look into any of the blind horse knives they are amazing also. their bushcrafter isn't a scandi but they do make one the boat tail which is pictured above. its a great knife also. hopefully i can pick one up at the 1500 this month. i sold my last one like a dumb ass.

I do like the Koster! What's the 1500?

Spyderco Bushcraft arrived! Major crack in the handle and chip in the spine of the blade. I wonder if that would have made it a second before the handle cracked... oh well, krazy glue!

I really like the size and shape of the thing. I think I'll order another before they're all gone :)

That "chip" in the blade is the second notch. They are cut to mark the knives as factory seconds. ;)

Ah ok I thought those were put in the ricasso. So if I order one from another retailer in the $150+ range, will it be a second or are the handles stabilized and the knife is under full warranty?

I emailed Spyderco this question.

If it doesn't have the notch it's under full warranty.

However, remember that Sal stated they experienced cracking on 90% of the knives. If you buy one for $150-$160 and the handles crack are you going to want to send it in for credit at the SFO?

I depends on how honest the retailer is. Sal said the scales had cracked on 95% of the run. If you pay $150 for one, it shouldn't have the notch cut in the spine and should be covered by warranty. If you get it and see that little notch, you've been robbed.

Be advised that the handle may crack even on the firsts, and there aren't any more firsts for Spyderco to replace it with, so the best you'd get would be credit toward a different knife.

I filled the cracks on my two with superglue and I've been using them with no issues.

NGK has some, I emailed asking if they're cracked. I don't know if I should get one and see how it is compared to the 2nd or wait for the next run of Bushcrafts with different handle material.

Have any tricks for getting the glue into the cracks? Does it seem like your handle shrunk around the knife a bit? I can feel the edges of the metal tang where they meet the wood.

IMHO -a big factor in getting a traditional scandi bushcraft knife is THE SHEATH. Traditional deep-carry/ semi-dangling scandi style sheaths are at least 50% of the appeal. None of those listed seem to have the sheath I am thinking of. I would have a custom sheath made regardless:thumbup::cool:.

YMMV

IMO Tom Krein makes a siiiiiiiiiiiiick knife. The grinds on his knives are awesome and if you can afford it try one out.

Yes, mine are shrunk away from the edges of the tang a little. Not too surprising since where I live makes Golden look like a rainforest. It isn't enough to bother me. As far as getting the glue into the cracks, that's why the runniest super glue you can find is recommended. It will wick down into the cracks just from being dripped on the surface. I had planned to use some thinned down epoxy, but it doesn't wick like that, so I stuck with the CA.

Let the handle acclimate for a few days before you do anything. If you live where the humidity is high, the wood will probably swell at least a little. Some have reported the cracks closing up completely.
