i would like to know what the steel in a harborfrieght machete is.its the 5 dollar one with the sof handles because if it is high carbon like it says it is and i suspect it might be because it holds the edge i gave it very well

if it is i would like to cut it down into a golok type thing

Possible, but they are often made in China out of 1050 carbon or 1.1210 , which is basically the same. AISI gives 0.48-0.55 C for 1050. High-carbon steels contain from 0.60 to 1.00% C with manganese contents ranging from 0.30 to 0.90%.

would it work for cutting into a golok type thing? i can post pics if it would be better

sweet! any one wanna see pics what im gonna do? and if i use a 4.5 inch angle grinder will i have to soak the blade in col water as not to screw up the temper?

We love to see pics of modified knives!

Yes, dunk it in water OFTEN. Your temp guage is right on the end of your hand, it's called a fingertip. If the metal is too hot to touch, you're taking big chances with the temper. If it turns blue, you have ruined the temper. Go slow and dunk often, it will be fine. Also remember that steel is easy to grind off, rather difficult to put back on!

Did I mention, dunk it in water often.

ok thier saving to my photobucket

I have to admit I've never bought steel by the pound but basically most steel types should be affordable, even in small quantities. It might be tricky to get a small piece since most steel dealers sell big bars only. Unless you are already a steel junkie at age 15, I wouldn't be concerned about what type of steel. Treating and tempering it right will influence the end result a lot.

I assume you are talking about forging. Go to a local machine shop and talk to the guys there, you might be able to pick up an end piece for next to nothing out of a dumpster. Another great source are junk yards. Look for pick-up truck blade springs, they make great machetes and goloks.

one more question about metal what would a good steel for a nessmuk style that would hold its edge well?
