Med School Exam Question

So today was the final exam of my Anatomy course, and one of the questions was, "You are at a picnic, and one of the people there starts choking, and coughs up food and a wasp. He starts going into anaphylactic shock and his airway closes up completely. You happen to have a pocket knife and need to establish an emergency airway, which structure must you cut though?"

Pretty cool, felt like sharing

(It's cricothyroid ligament btw)

Hey, first year! Welcome to the party!

Still never seen one done, and I'm a fourth year.

You seem to be mistaken on what a medical assistant does. It's not just 100% paperwork.

You seem to not know what they do either. Only people whose scope of practice can do such things are Paramedics, (and only if the procedure is allowed by their Medical Director), or Doctors. Ain't going to ever happen for a "Medical Assistant".

I was interning at the hospital earlier today and got to see an emergency tracheostomy and it was pretty crazy.

I have been an otolaryngologyst for 25 years, and in that time I have had to perform a grand total of 4 emergency tracheotomies. Fortunately, in the O.R., with a complete surgical team. I don't want to have to do a fifth. Cricothirotomy, none (and don't want to either. A lot of things can go wrong, specially if you can't identify the cricothiroid membrane correctly an enter, for instance the thyroid gland. You can loose the patient).
