To those of you who got medallions, can you tell me if the front and back both have the kami symbols?

I got a very nice one from Yangdu from the several she had from the 12/30 deals, and am just comparing features. There are some very slight differences between the front and back. Very nice work.

I was also lucky enough to get an older 8 Kami medallion from Yvsa, that is a bit smaller in diameter but beautifully engraved. The back on that is quite a bit different from the front.

No problems here, just curious...

Thanks!

Norm

As does mine. There are some very minor differences between the two sides due to engraving by hand but the designs are the same.

These are very impressive, aren't they? Mine is built like the proverbial tank.

Yesss.... just the minor differences caused by something labor-intensively made by hand.

and you got Yvsa's old one? Lucky you!

I did a little digging in the old threads - and found the story of how the medallion came about.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-147144.html

that story tells you what jokers these kamis really are, and continue to be. This thing makes one heck of a keychain.... you'd never lose your keys! Because you just can't carry them.

About the 8-kami job:

Mine has been imbued with anti-cyclonic properties, which will come in useful after June 1, and additionally, seems to posess the power to attract ancient weapons. Unfortunately, they come covered in cosmoline.

Front and back of one of the old medallions.

Nova it's really good to have you posting with us again! :D

Your old medallion is different than the one I sold Norm. Mine had eight kami marks, was apparently thinner and had a flat edge that had vertical grooves struck like a coin.
I don't know who struck the kami marks and then done the engraving on the medallions but whomever, they were skilled! :D

The medallions are truly beautiful. Nova, that one has sold me.

I thought by now 'medallion' question would mean a more ambitious thread. Haven't any of you tried placing them under your pillows at night to see if you can't communicate to the other medallion holders in your dreams?

Mine (just got it) is the same on both sides. was hoping the back side would be different. Glad to see the pics posted above. Gives me some ideas.

Hi Yvsa! :) My medallion is fairly thin and has the little vertical grooves around the edge as well. I wonder if any of the medallions from that first batch were exactly the same, or if they were all a little different.

No way, man. With my luck, the medallion fairy will take it away and leave me a dollar bill or a packet of crayons or something... :p

If you burn an image of the medallion into you hand, will you still be able to find the Well of Souls?

I am the customer who asked for a signed piece of leaf spring. I was really surprised when Bill emailed and told me the kamis decided to sign an engraved brass medallion. I was thrilled when it arrived, even though I still wanted a piece of leaf spring :).

I'll see if I can dig mine out and take some photos of it.

~By the way, I did carry my keys on it when I was in college...I only had two keys though :).

If you get five medallion bearers seated in a star shape, can you contact a distant galaxy?

munk

Only if they are wearing the right tennis shoes.:)

Wow, Novadak, many thanks. I did want to see that one.
and LongRifle, very cool to be a part of HI history.

All right, munk, since you asked...

Top 10 Powers and Uses of the Six Kami Medallion.

1. It attracts weapons, especially new khukuris and milsurp rifles.

2. You can in fact use it for communication; wait, hold on a sec. My medallion's ringing...

3. It can and WILL repel hurricanes, the bane of my existence.

4. It stores and radiates good will.

5. It inspires creativity and reminds you to be humble, despite any perceived "success" in life.

6. It brings luck, of course, but cannot win you the Lotto. That's karmaic cheatin'.

7. Think of the craftspeople that made it- endeavor to work that hard and be grateful for what you have.

8. It makes you better lookin'. Or your Christmas tree.

9. Of course it can locate the Well of Souls or Holy Grail- it's just a matter of gettin' out there and looking. No five medallion bearers have ever been in the same state, so what would happen with combined power... Dunno.

10. It's basically an autograph, from artisans we all respect. And no adversity can ever, ever, defeat you, as long as you have a medallion- and believe that.

OK, Great. But who has the One Medallion that rules them all...?
I'm pretty sure it's Bura.

But it could be the Dalai Lama or this one really BIG Yeti.

Or... ?

Yvsa, from the description you would expect the older 8-kami medallion to be thinner. I assumed it was, but then thought to check, and amazingly they are identical. Not just close, but identical. However, the edges of the new medallion are completely smooth, while the old one has the overlapping edge ring/grooves as you say, which add a nice touch. The old one is fully engraved on the backside, while the new one is also engraved but with the same pattern as the "front" but with some minor differences.

The main difference is the new medallion is about 1/4" larger in diameter.
I went and measured them both, and here is what I found (for those into such details!):

Old 8-Kami medallion: 2.135" at largest diameter, 2.10" at smallest diameter (these are not perfectly round obviously), for an average diameter of 2.118". Thickness is from a min. of .134" to a max. of .142". Weighs 2.4 oz. (68 grams.)

New 6-Kami medallion: 2.41" at largest diameter, 2.355" at smallest diameter, for an average diameter of 2.383". Thickness is from a min of .134" to a max. of .142". The new ones were estimated at 3/16", but at .14" are actually just 1/64th past 1/8" in thickness (9/64). Weighs 3.0 oz. (85 grams.)

Difference in diameter between the old and the new is .265", or a 64th more than 1/4" (17/64).

I find it amazing that two medallions made years apart could both come out exactly at the same thickness. Obviously they must have been cut out of a piece of the same stock.

In any case, they are both nice pieces of work, and a cool addition to the HI shrine in anyones home. ;) :D

I am trying to get a list of all the Kami's that are represented by each medallion, but that will take some more research, for the old one anyway.
