MEDITation in Blue

Great looking Mini!! And Sharpie Spa treatment.... you colored the scales with a sharpie and wiped it off?

nice score on the mini ;)

Eh, you should know. Thanks again for the heads up! :)

i think a Sway Back Jack in that color would be sweet!

For sure! I think just about anything in this color would be sweet, although this mini trapper is pushing the upper limits of size for me.

I'd be in for a mini copperhead with the same smooth scales as my tiny trapper, or any of these knives with CV blades. (Or just about any mini wharncliffe copperhead with CV blades, but I digress.)

In the meantime, I'm wondering if others' recent RIT dye experiments might hold some promise for ameliorating the billboard logo effect on Case's other smooth bone mediterraneans. Perhaps a quick dip in Evening Blue wouldn't darken the original blue too much, while rendering the logo something more palatable than Bright White?

... I'd probably still resent the huge logo, though.

What a shame.

T'anks. I like it a lot!

Yes, yes I did!

I was fortunate to have a blue-gray Sharpie (a Bic Mark*It, to be exact) in a multi-color set. I colored the scales, let the knife sit for while to dry, then cleaned it off with Naphta to remove any surface ink. More absorbed than I'd expected, if not as much as I'd hoped. Here's a "before" of the shield side, and a before and after of the pile side (the scales don't have as stark color lines or bright spots, nor are as pale, in real-life lighting as appears through the lens here-- this is in rather direct light):

I may attempt some RIT dye as just mentioned in another response, but the color is actually pretty good now.

I'm just evidently spoiled by the scales of my tiny trapper, which are perfect to me. If I recall correctly, your tiny trapper is on the pale side as well? I wonder if Case starts to run out of dye toward the end of runs and settles for what they deem "good enough"...?

Yep, mine's lighter than your Tiny. I haven't decided if I'll try to darken it up a bit.

Wow....

Having some idea of how the color of these scales photograph, I don't know if I'd touch that one-- I imagine it's stunning in person.

i got to see one of the billboard models in a case, it looked as if the white logo was engraved into the bone.

Hunh. Curiouser and curiouser. Also Worse, if that's what Case has done.

In happier news, I got a more accurate picture of the new mini's blue:

Case's wharncliffe mini trapper is among my top favorite patterns. That Mediterranean blue bone on it makes it especially attractive. I have a tiny trapper like yours in Med blue bone, but not either of the other two sizes.

I also like Case's navy blue bone; my "Sunday" mini copperhead in navy blue with the red shield is nice enough that I may get another as a "spare".

Beautiful blues there, P. And great success with the "sharpie dye" treatment! I confess I didn't know that one and now I'm looking for a good candidate to try it on.

I agree on both counts. :) The wharncliffe Mini Trapper seems to carry a little heavier than other knives of the same length and relative size, but I still recommend it as a good "everything" knife for just about anyone.

Yes, the navy blue is striking, especially with the red shield. A spare sounds a good idea, especially in light of your currently "hiding" amber iteration.

Thanks! I'm very pleased with 'em, and glad I grabbed them when I did (still New Old Stock at the time, save for the Mini Trapper which I lured from the 'Bay).

I've discovered that the results of the Sharpie "dye" can vary greatly from knife to knife, depending on the bone, potential saturation, surface, etc. I've had other knives on which Sharpie rubs right off again; I decided to leave well enough alone rather than attempting to sand the bone and try again (if that would even help?), although I might give it another go sometime.

As noted, however, the Sharpie did the trick for this blue Mini Trapper. It looks better to my eyes, though I wish the color had soaked in more consistently (and as deeply as it did in one more evidently porous area).
