Medium Jacks

Thanks Joshua. GT nailed it. I don't recall ever seeing a spear in a Case copperhead. Case has made a bunch of knives over the years though, so it wouldn't surprise me.

Thanks for another pic, Mike; I could look at those EZ 49 CVs all day!!:thumbsup::thumbsup::cool::)
(Unfortunately, Case's website doesn't appear to indicate that that model will be coming out of the Vault for 2021.)

So cool! I've been watching a few of these recently on the auction site, but I'm not sure I want to let myself go down another rabbit hole right now. Seems about perfect for daily carry and use.
Just in case you didn't know, the 6235 1/2 uses the same frame, or at least has the same size frame, as the Case Barlow. Blade compliment is also the same - may vary a little depending on age of knife. The pen on the 1979 6235 1/2 is slightly smaller than the pen on a newish Case Barlow, but the mains are the same.

I did not know that and appreciate the info. The Barlows from last year also piqued my interest but I haven't bought one yet. Guess maybe it's no surprise that both caught my eye.

Curious if you would consider the Case Bose Cattle Knife a medium Jack John? I apologize if it’s already been mentioned here.

This GEC #85 Bullet End Jack is 3 5/8" closed, so I'd call that medium in size. It's also one of my favorite jack patterns with the spear/coping blade combo. This one is smooth buffalo horn. It's a very generous gift from Paul Hilborn, who I think added the EO notch and modified the original pen blade.

I (personally) wouldn't consider a Stockman knife as a Jack knife... but that's just me. I still believe that Jack knives have one or multiple blades attached on the same end.

This has always been my understanding as well. I suppose one of us should check on the definition in Levine's Vol. IV I have a copy but who knows where? I'll try to find it and share what he says. I suppose size (i.e. "medium") is subjective, but configuration is more precisely defined and agreed upon.

I was wondering the same thing. From another thread:

In Levine's Guide to Knives and their Values, 4th Edition, Bernard Levine offers this definition:

"JACK KNIFE" is a general term for the simplest form of folding knife. The standard jack knife is single-ended. Its blade or blades are hinged at one end of the handle. There are also a few large heavy-duty double-end jack knife patterns. Double-end jack knives have a large blade in each end.

Small knives with blades pivoted at both ends are called "pen knives." Tiny single-ended knives with just a short pen blade are called "quill knives." Although they are constructed like jack knives, quill knives were the original pen-sharpening knives, so they too are classed as pen knives.

Technically what is a "jack"? | BladeForums.com

I am quickly losing mine, so... :D

I guess the Double-end Jack would include the Muskrat and Moose knives.
That's what I thought. Surprised me. I wouldn't have classified those as jack knives. The more ya learn about pocket knives, the more there is to learn sip.gif

My newest. Another Camillus with Western blades and 1977 Case 6207. The 6207 is now the Mini Trapper. This one has the same frame, but given its blade compliment I think its more appropriately called a Jack, or Dogleg Jack. Nice bone on it.
Went outside to take these pics. Nope. Nope. Nope. Its 1 degree (Fahrenheit) and snowing hard. Started my vehicles to let them run and sat in the car and took these. In the time it took to take a dozen pics or so, my fingers went numb

And Remington or sort of Remington green slabs. The final days of Camillus.
