Medium Sized Knives

+1 City folks like us with family and kids will most likely have to stay put in the event of a natural disaster. Having said that....the ability to move and move quickly is still of great value to me.

If ounces in that setting is so important I'll just make the kids take a potty break first. :p:thumbup:

But so far "weight" seems to be the major factor here. Right?

I have lived in cities my entire life, by golly I feel that I need me a moab.

I consider it an insurance plan.

I was hoping this thread would cause a flood of HOGS and PIGLETS to flood the exchange with medium sized Busses at rock bottom prices. 'Cause I want my NO-E back. ;) :D

You guys are going to think I'm crazy.
But I carry my HH on a drop leg sheath my RMD on the other side at a slant and then my HRLM in a horizontal carry in the small of my back.
Then in my PSK a DJ with an adjustable sheath.

All that to go backpacking? A guy at work spends a week every summer on the AT. His knife? A small Gerber slipjoint.

And I fully agree that when batonning comes into play the mid size blades hold their own. I mean how much chopping does a city boy need to do? :D

So in conclusion, the best knife is the Basic-9 at less-than-20oz and 9"+ long.

And the SFNO shows why it is so great - decent blade size, good chopping, light weight (a half-ounce heavier than a NO-E.)

I am not sure if these are all considered "medium" sized knives but these are the ones I am trying to narrow down:

ASH1
NO-E
SFNO
RW
CW

but then another side of me thinks that I could go a bit smaller, since I have the FFBM, so I like the:

CG BATAC
HRLM
BAIII

Tough call. But fun trying. ;)

I'm going to show my lack of paying attention over the past 6 months right now - what does the rw, cw and hrlm stand for again?

(rw= rat weiler? cw= chop weiler?, I know none of the newer swamp rat names, so that might account for some of my memory lapse)

This isn't too far off. My FABM is 9" blade at exactly 20.1oz in INFI :D

Sorry. I shouldn't do that.

RW = Ratweiler
CW = Chopweiler (newer version of the RW)
HRLM = Howling Rat Little Mischief

I was just thinkin that I'd have to do a revision to the acronyms list, but 3 production blades passing me by seemed like a lot.

How would you guys compare the HRLM and CG BATAC to one another. Even in the same niche? I have had both, sold both to try others, and both are knives that stand out.

I say foget aboutit! Get a SH-e LE! I think I might get the butt taken off mine :D

Great thread!!

I have a CG SJTAC and a CG FBM.

Between those two knives, I don't think you really need anything else.

The SJTAC is perfect for camp duties and the FBM is the dedicated chopper.

Of course any of my thicker FSH's (HH's or HOGFSH's) could easily substitute for the FBM.
