I'm not willing to give out too much that I've invested in time and money; but as for epoxy I've had good luck with the West System, available in marine supply stores. Grid yourself for sticker shock...
 
Put a scorpion into some for an 11 or a 14. Needless to say I think those are beast.
 
Love the 15! Not a fan of the clear scales on the 5 but looks well done. The wife wants a set of those red ones with a small magnifying glass epoxied into them somewhere so she can start fires.

Lets just say like the rest of life, you get what you pay for. Most of the transparent epoxies sold for craft stuff is way too brittle for scales. They look pretty, but the first time you tighten the screws and hear a sickening "crack!" you'll know what I mean.

Fractures could make for some interesting patterns if you could somehow encase them inside a solid scale...
