Mega or Survival Keychains

Well he has no ordering information on his page except if you are going to ship him a knife. So I sent him an email asking how I can order 2 rigs for my Arc AAA and Micra. Hope I hear from him soon.

If Eric doesn't reply in a week or two, try again. He's real busy with military orders quite often... can't imagine for where.

Eric is a busy guy, but he's always responded to my emails in a couple days tops. If you have ICQ, try and reach him that way.

I wasn't aware so many othere people have these, no one I've ever met thought of it the way I do. My keys have changed a lot since I decided to put gear on them. I started out thinking of EVERYTHING I could fit on there that would be useful. As you might have guessed it turned out rather large and bulky and not all the stuff I had I really needed on there. I have continued to par it down and replace too large items with more efficient ones. As it stands as I write this, here is what I've got, pictures to follow.

A D-ring for my "keychain", on that are two key rings, one has keys which is only my car and house keys. The other ring has my gear, there is also a coil of paracord wrapped in electrical tape attached to the D ring with a snap chain.

All my gear

* D ring (quick link)- for holding all the stuff, useful for defense, rappelling
* hacksaw blade- sawing, cutting, making traps for game, fire striker
* prybar- prying, screw tool, small ruler
* clippers- hand maintenance
* Leatherman Micra- scissors, tweezers, screw drivers and a small blade
* swiss tech tool- pliers, wire cutters and screw drivers
* keyring screw drivers (for larger stuff)
* generic Photon micro light as they don't sell the good ones here
* 15' of 550 cord wrapped in 10' of electrical tape- who knows how many uses

Here is how everything looks now, only change is the Pelican light is replaced by the photon. (I forgot to take photos of it now spread out)

Exactly as is

Here you can see how well the D ring fits my hand and why it can be used as an impromptu weapon (normally you'd want to remove keys if possible)...

Here is how it used to look with a lot more stuff on it

This is someone elses but I thought it was pretty cool

A breathtaking rig. I am awestruck.

If I put that in my pocket -- ANY pocket -- it would rip the bottom seam out. Right now I carry my keys in the pocket of my corduroy sportcoat. Your rig is a big bulky for a sportcoat.

I love what you've got, but I think I'd have to rent a U-Haul or a Sherpa guide to carry it for me.

As you can see in the photos it really isn't that large but I understand not everyone wants to carry a lot of gear. I hope you aren't confused with the last photo in my post, I labeled it but it might not have come out right. The very last photo is someone elses keychain and not my own, I just like it, all the other photos are of my rig.

It looks like the D-ring takes the most space and weighs the most. What I do with these posts is I print them out, study them, and see how they compare with my own needs and my own keychain.

Sometimes I see the need for an item I don't already carry. If my keychin is already stuffed, as it is now, I get the item, but put it into my EDC shoulder bag.

I realize the last thing isn't yours. I skipped it. Totally impractical for my needs. Besides, I like your rig.

Good Lord, now have I rig envy. :)

Yes it is the bulkiest and heaviest item but one thing I like in hardware is rugged construction. That is why I make even my small knives out of 1/4'' stock, no less. The reason I prefer the D ring to a carabiner or other gated device is it closes securely and has no wobble or wiggle in any way, it feels like a solid piece of steel and I like that. Also carabiners just wouldn't work as an impromptu weapon, mine does (it has so far gone unmolested at airports though that could change, as of yet I have not been denied taking it on a flight). Second I can use the D ring as an emergency descender, a carabiner is a bad idea because they can open, the locking gated ones would put too much friction on the rope due to the mechanism of the gate. I am glad you like my design, I am constantly looking for ways of improving it. I have a few ideas for a solid piece multi tool in the works for going on my chain. I was thinking of something that is as modular as possible. A piece of metal that has sockets for nuts and bolts of uselful sizes including one for securing the gate. Other options would be threaded holes for securing a razor blade like knife similar to the ones on game skinners. There are other options but I do not want to give too much information. If anyone wants further specifics of my multi tool designs email or message me and I will consider it.

If you like the rig but think it is too bulky it can of course be modified. If you remove the central D ring and a few other items it becomes much lighter and smaller. Say if instead of the micra and swisstech tool you had a ...what is that leatherman just larger than the micra....I forget. Anway if you replace the micra with that other tool with pliers, ditch the D ring and use a little less paracord it then is only (guessing judging on the weight of the D ring) half or less the weight it was previously and at least half the bulk. I have small hands being only 5'5" and 130lbs and everything fits in my palm as it is now.

My key carry:

Hinderer modular kubatonw/key ring and nasty short bezel tip
Photon freedom white Atwood prybaby, mostly used for opening beer
Keys

I carry the kubaton tucked IWB on my left side, it balances the weight of the attached tools and is completely invisible, so much so that I have been waved through airport security when I have forgotten to take it out and put it in my carry on. The tools there are only things that I use on a regular basis. fire starting, knives etc are in pockets or bag.
Another way to get weight off the key ring I like is to carry a prybaby on a neck chain. One of the titanium jobs with an anodized finish would be ideal for this as its light and corrosion proof. Though I carried my s30v version this way while in africa for three weeks and there was no discoloration or rust, despite being a sweaty beast.
