One of my jobs is at a cutlery store.

And we got the Mini Axis, Mel Pardue Axis, and Dark Star in a shipment.

So I got to play with them and this is what I think.

Mel Pardue Axis

Retail $145, our price $130.

I am not going to go into a lot of deatil, just the high points.

Very smooth feeling, the handles are comfortable and ergonomic, the thumb ramp meets the thumb at a natural position. The pinky hook and guard with slight finger swell, combine to make a really ergonomic knife. Though it is kind of thick, which some may not like in the pocket.

The high grind of the main bevel bodes well for performance, but the false edge is really false, it hardly even thins the tip. It is primarily cosmetic.

The action, is smooth without being loose. The Axis lock itself wanted to jam a bit, but I don't know if that is standard. One thing that did bother me was the future travel possibility of the lock to deal with wear, the lock can only travel 1/16th of an inch, and if I remember correctly that is the average on the knives I have seen. One thing I noticed on an Axis is that the pivot is loose to make it smooth, but then there is blade play.

The knife offers two seperate clip attachment points, pivot and butt end, but R side only. If they are going to offer those why not L too, since the lock is ambi? And the pocket clip interferes slightly with operating Axis lock when the clip is atached at the pivot.

Lanyard hole is inside area of grip, just slightly less than 5/8ths from end. If you were using a lanyard, it would interfere with your grip possibly becoming uncomfortable or loosening your grip. Of course since many people don't use a lanyard it means practically nothing.

All for now, Ask away....

Yeah, it wanted to stick, but the strange part was that flicking or snapping the knife was not the problem.

I am going to look at it some more

My 710 had the same problem when I first got it. I'd do the old "wrist wave" thing and the button would stick a bit when I tried to unlock it. In general, the harder the blade was opened, the more likely the button/lock was to "stick". A little Tuff Glide and some play time and it cleared up.

Well,

I have played with it more, and it is really cool.

I like the feel of the aluminum handle.

The ergos are good.

I may make this the Axis lock of my collection.
