"Melted" my Spyderco Manix

Very nice work.

As another who EDC's a large Manix, I agree, IMHO the large
Manix is the best knife Spyderco has made to date.

I'm sitting on the fence waiting for Spyderco's planned large
Manix 2. If it's 4" S30V or S90V with tip down carry option,I'll
be all over it.

Until then, I'm very happy with my original Manix.

I read the Title "Melted My Manix" and I thought OH NOO - thought you had an accident and hit it with a Torch or dropped it into something. :D

Very nice Job all the way around. Looks very comfortable.

The Manix is the best knife Spyderco has made. I had to smooth out the jimping so I could use my pocket when the Manix was in it.

I doubt that Spyderco will make a larger Manix than the original, but maybe bigger than the Manix II.

I just can't understand why Spyderco would drop such an excellent knife from it's lineup... I don't have one, but I've wanted one ever since a friend showed me his. Spyderco NEEDS a large, robust folder in its lineup, and the old Manix was it.

I just wish Spyderco would make one of these big 'uns in materials that can keep it within a working-man's budget....

Wow, awesome job!
The rounded spine really looks great on there.

Don't have the nerve to try it myself (yet) :D

Agreed but that is where all the old versus new debate begins too ;) That is where all the debate issues with the Manix 2 started IMHO . . .

I would be very happy with a Tenacious size knife with a FFG S30V or 154CM blade and thicker liners. That would be more towards my taste than the new Manix2.

can you give us details on the procedure/how long it took. It looks great btw

The spine was done with a die grinder with 2" abrasive pads and a sheet of 400 grit sandpaper. If you have access to an air compressor and a steady hand then this mod can be done by anyone, just remember to keep the die grinder moving for a smooth end result. Put the knife in a vice witht the blade pointing at you. Get the profile you want with the die grinder, then once it looks exactly like you want it, smooth it out by rubbing the sandpaper in the same dirrection until you get a uniform buffed appearance.

The radius on the handles was profiled completely with 400 grit sandpaper. Simply use the pressure of the pad of your thumb to break down the edges of the bevel into a radius. I buffed it after I was done sanding, but that was mainly for the liners because the G-10 didn't need any buffing.

Absolutely beautiful work, and done with much simpler methods & tools than I'd assumed when I looked at your pictures. I'm not a machinist, so this gives me hope that I might actually be able to do this myself someday. I bought the original 'big' Manix a few years ago to add to my 'accumulation'. Haven't used or otherwise done anything with it since (besides pack it away somewhere), but this post gives me something new to consider down the road. I'll have to 'experiment' with an older/cheaper, more 'disposable' knife in the near term, before I am brave enough to try it with my Manix...

Well done!
