13989.83665M , Is that a number?
That should be the total number for the 5 years adding 10% for each of the 4 years following 72.

Big Dog glad you are aboard. Your track record always makes you 8 to 5 on the morning tote. Micheal Thanks again that last one lost me. Dale where are you>??? This is starting out OK hopefully we will pull some out side people, interest is the blood that sustains us. hmmm.... 13,989,836 is. You wanna add 65% of a knife to it?
Huh?
I'm saying 13989.83665 million knives produced for the five year period in question. And that is after a really bad day. I think LT may have passed on his Memorial Day curse to me.

Hi guys! I see you visiting and reading here! Please join in the contest! It doesn't cost a dime, and it is open to all!

Wow, I'd guess that someone has some inside info on this...

I took the 1972 figure and applied the rate of real growth of Gross Domestic Product in USA from 1972 to 1976 (only statistical figure that I found on the web that may indicate industrial growth in those days). This gave me a figure of around 12,700,000.

I also found the increase of production of Victorinox in Switzerland in those days, if I apply their rate of growth to Schrade I would get about 17,000,000 for the total 5 year production.

I will go with the average of those two numbers...

My guess: 14,850,000

Luis

P.S. As a former statistician I'll add that the margin of error in my estimate is much to large to give any validity to my guess....

DOn Luis, I found other factors as well, but decided to discard them as irrelevant to the actual question asked based solely on the information provided. As a point of interst, here are my doodles on that:

...with the caveat that the figure for 1976 is only a projection of a 275,000 unit increase over 1975, not an actual record (assuming the document is dated after fiscal 1975, before fiscal 76). The unit production volume is NOT a 1:1 ratio with sales figures, since the 15OT, for example listed for $15.00 in 1972, and $20.00 in 1976, a 33% increase in MSRP in the five years. Other knives, such as the popular 8OT, which listed for $8.00 in 1972, had a MSRP of $12.00 five years later in 1976, a 50% increase. So the gross sales figures leave out too much to be of use in telling us very much about profit and overhead, much less the actual figures of units produced for '76.

Well, I utilized Newton's Law of Relativity, the Pythagorean therom, Einstein's Theory of Relativity, the Chaos Theory, some Kentucky windage, some writings by Colonel Jeff Cooper, mostly what I read, and my trusty abacus... ( from above table #2 at Kelly's Pool Hall ) ...to arrive at the number. It's the nuts.

If I win, I sure hope I get some good stuff from LT. Maybe he'll crink a little too much Drown Royal, and throw in Ole Jim's knife by mistake. Ohhhhhh yeah baby!! :D

Getting in on this a little late, been a busy weekend.

Did get to see some good movies this weekend, and remember those who didn't make it back...

my guess is 13,714,302

Thanks, Rich...

Glenn

OK LT,
I will give it a shot. I am back on line now, after a busy weekend.
I am not sure what I was looking at, but I got a much larger number than most of you.
45,683,0000 knives

I think my math sux.

Dale

Sorry about that, 13,989,836 is what I think I ment to say. It all seems clear to me now.
Thanks Rick

Dale my friend well first thankyou for coming in, but dang that number is large enough to cover all the knives made in the world for that time frame. I think you are just being a gentleman. in 72 ( which I gave it was under 3 million ) there were only four more years to add. Your call my friend but feel free to adjust your estimate lots of time.

This has a good start now lets get some newbys in. LT

It all seems clearer this morning........I see the light! :D
I came up with 14,310,803 knives for the 5 year period. If my first number had been correct, we Schrade collectors would have a much easier time collecting the knives we love!
