I know it is Memorial Day because the Citico Beach Volunteer Firefighters are manning their annual fund raising roadblock..... I also have been feeling an urge to make deviled eggs and Cole slaw, consume hot dogs and burgers and set off a firework or two......

When I see the roadblock I also know that I will start the inevitable musings over why we set aside a day to memorialize the sacrifices of those who keep us safe and free and those who have kept the country I love and admire safe and free.......

We owe those patriots a debt beyond measure..... Soooo, before I munch a 'dog and slurp a brew this weekend, I plan to raise the flag and salute those that keep us free and give thanks for their willingness to sacrifice on our behalf....

Be safe in your travels this weekend, enjoy family and friends, good food and a modicum of the demon rum and spend a little time thinking of those we owe.....Big time....

Amen Ethan. To all my brother combat vets and those who serve today, may we always remember our fallen comrades of all wars.

Right On, a HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL THE MEN AND WOMEN, who gave up so much for this Great Country. Be safe all and get the Grills going.

I will be fighting in a Civil War reenactment for the weekend. The unit is going to hand out around a fire afterwards and probably ponder about the meaning of memorial day and such. Good times.

I'll be putting flowers on my son's grave at Culpeper National Cemetery.

USMCPOP,

I am sorry for your loss, doesnt even begin to cover it. Memorial day is one of those days that I struggle to find words that can actually express how I feel about our past present and future members of the military, and their families.
No parent should ever have to endure the loss of a child.Take it how you will but I grieve a little every time I hear about a fallen soldier, a wounded soldier, and even those who come back with wounds that we cant see so easily. I need to make it clear to anyone who has served or is serving, and the families of those people that there is a part of me that loves and admires you all for you service and sacrifice. Thank you so much for what you do and have done.

USMCPOP....As a father of a Navy F-18 pilot, who had the world at his fingertips after a great education, I can say there are many young Americans who felt the need to see that our great country would be kept strong by their sacrifices for the rest of us. As has happened for generations. My heart and prayers go out to all who have had paid a price for our freedom...

Ethan, Thank you for starting this thread.

I always stop and gasp when I see a Gold Star and think of the Gold Star mothers and fathers that are out there. Next to my God, I love this great country so much and cannot even begin to think of how to acknowledge the debt and honor the loss of those who fought for what I love, many take for granted and growing minority disrespect - this great country of our.

I will drink a beer and eat a hot dog (more than once) this weekend but will not forget to honor the ultimate price paid by so many.

God bless the United States of America and thank God for our fallen veterans and their families.

Yes indeed!! Thanks to all of those who gave everything for the peace and safety of the rest of us.

Thanks, guys. As this is a knife forum, here's a pic my son took of the knife he carried in Iraq. Boker Applegate-Fairbairn.

As he once wrote "... I joined because I thought it was just one small way that I could contribute to the people of this country... although the discipline didn't hurt much either."

Good kid, had a 4 year scholarship to VCU engineering school. He might have ended up as a Marine pilot or a small-arms designer.

just putting this out there - thanks to all those who gave and those who gave all.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

happy weekend everyone, don't do too much ...

It's good to remember that this is not just a long weekend. Funny thing, my parents (and my dad is a vet...though he never identifies as such and you'd never know it at 84) got married on Memorial Day in 1958 when it was ALWAYS on May 30th, believing that their anniversary would forever be a holiday. Interesting that this year it actually does fall on the 30th. Memory....I will be using mine to remember those who have given their service and sacrifice to protect what a lot of us (myself sometimes included) take for granted. As my German born grandmother used to say (when calling up her senator or congressman) used to say: "the price of freedom is constant vigilance". I'll remember, and memorialize.....and enjoy the long weekend as well.

Thank you Ethan for this post.

Thank you to all who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. My family remembers and thanks them all.

This weekend is a great time to celebrate and spend time with family and friends, for what better way to honor those that willingly put themselves in harm's way than to exercise the very freedom that they provide.

USMCPOP, I'm am sincerely sorry for the loss of your son. I have a little girl that will turn 3 this summer. I have never met you, and did not know your son, but know that I am forever grateful to him and all the heroes that provide her with a free country to grow up in.

Thank you Ethan for this post.

Thank you to all who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. My family remembers and thanks them all.

Thank you for saying the words I was struggling to say.
My thanks to all that have served. Those that made it back and those that didn't. You are my heroes.

Hey BeeKay.....

You Aussies are in my thoughts as well this weekend..... We have shed blood together since WWI and every fracas since..... It is along list too...... You Aussies make the best of friends and, I am happy to say, really awful enemies..... May we always have each other's back.....
