Gerber E-Z Out, if that counts. I think it probably does... One handed opening, polymer handle, locking blade.
I think I got it in '96, maybe '97. Bought an E-Z Out Jr. for the girl I was dating at the time, shortly after I got mine, and since we were both avid outdoorspeople, she loved it and carried it everywhere. I hadn't yet gotten my feet wet in the Benchmade/Spyderco puddle, so I thought it was the greatest thing ever.
It was the knife that introduced me to the idea of one-handers, and the notion that not all blades looked like a shiny Buck knife (bead-blasted finish was
amazing at the time). After I got it and carried it for a while, I started to realize that technology (of which I'm a big fan) was being applied to the making & design of pocketknives (of which I've always been a fan)... The light bulb clicked on, and a monster was born.
Still have it, although I don't carry it any more. Maybe I'll wait until I meet a budding knifeknut who's carrying a real piece of crap, and pass it along.
Peace.
Alex.
