Mercenaries like the M-21

From Websters Collegiate Dictionary On Line------This was cut and pasted from site:

MERCENARY : one that serves merely for wages; especially : a soldier hired to fight in a foreign country for which he is not a citizen.

Who can argue with Mr. Webster ?

True. Most contractors just object to the use of the word 'merely' in the definition.
(Tip of the hat to the movie "The Substitute")

Mercenaries fight for anyone for money and will shoot their own side without hesitation, because they have no side.

I think that all soldiers should be issued with something better like an emerson or CRK.

I think your evaluation of mercenaries is needlessly harsh.

I'd rather see the money go into body armour. Spydercos should be just fine.

Mercenaries work for foreign governments and are not likely to survive or get paid, historically. Read up on the African work of the '60's thru '80's.

Contractors work more often for their own government - and get paid. Survival is still their option. 600 contractors have died in Iraq, but thousands of Al-Quieda mercenaries from other countries have, too. The odds favor the contractor.

There were over 120,000 contractors in Iraq according to one source, and I bet their choice of knives isn't much more exotic than what they carried right before they separated from service, mundane Sydercos, CRKT's, Cold Steels, and the like already discussed in previous relevant threads.

Most mercenaries probably carry local purchase knives from the bazaar.

Just 2c more. The M21 does look like it might fit the EDC role as well.

....oh and back on topic...the knife is ok, but I think that all soldiers should be issued with something better like an emerson or CRK.

Now that would be a waste of money. Most folks wouldn't use it for more than opening the occasionally feisty MRE pack or slicing paracord...why spend so much when a basic quality production folder will do the job admirably?

not all the contractors are US, i know there are some brits doing it for one.

if i was going to iraq making that kinda dollar i would get a better knife than a CRKT anything, for me it would be a EKI CQC12 or CQC8.

Well yeah. But you are enough of a knife nut to talk about knives for at least six years running with a bunch of other knife nuts on the internet, so your statement is pretty unsurprising.

Are the Brits contracting with the US or with the British gov?

I know a few soldiers that carry various CRKT knives including the M-21. It's not a bad knife for the money. Brits aren't the least of it there are also quite a few african "contractors" working in Iraq. My favorite are the Ugandans.

Both our governments can easily afford to put a lot more money into a soldier's and LEOs pay packet.

I don't know about in Australia, but here in the USA the federal government does not earn any money. Therefore, the only money that government has is that which it confiscates from the citizenry by threat. I'm a Police Officer and I'd love to be paid more, but I realize that I can't be paid more than the public can afford. The liberal mindset, which induces people to believe that the government is entitled to our money, is destroying my country and yours.

Sorry for getting off topic, but that kind of thinking drives me crazy. As far as CRKT, I think they put out an excellent product at a reasonable price.
